Last night I watched 'A Million Ways to Die in the West' I found it funny with enough laugh moments to keep me watching, kind of like a modern version of Blazing Saddles.

Film #70 at the cinema this year and quite possibly the best of the lot. I was on edge for two hours and at one point physically recoiled (as did half the audience it seemed). Stunning performances and beautifully shot.

Viola Davis for an Oscar nod has to be a good shout, and Daniel Kaluuya was bloody terrifying.
'twas bloody good I agree - one of those films with an original style and mood, and female leads who didn't act to stereotype, it was a slow burn which took the time to actually develop the characters (the trailer is, as usual, very misleading and makes it out to be a full-on action heist movie)

8.5 stabs in the leg / 10

It annoys me that they moved the story to the USA, but dammit sounds good

Just watched the True Grit remake, damn it's a good film. THe original certainly didn't need a make-over, but I'm glad they did.

exemplary model of an unnecessary remake that adds to the greatness of the original

Chicago is used amazingly well in the movie so I really don't think it matters. One shot in particular on a car bonnet is the most original scene I've seen for a long, long time.

Struggled through that scene to be honest! Not quite as shocking as his first moment in the film (in the indoor basketball court), I don't think you actually see anything but it's so sudden and brutal.

Same score from me. More twists than a pasta spiral.
Great photography - look at the Chicago skyline framed within the boat's Aerofoil . Impressive.

I’ll watch that as it’s one of my favourite films, hope it’s not the usual.

Just out of this myself.

Have to admit... utterly ruined by the trailer for me. I normally avoid trailers, but I had seen this one a couple of times prior to some films recently, and vividly remembered Liam Neeson walking away from the van with two holdalls in hand. The opening scene is great, however the trailer completely destroys the idea that his character is dead. So I spent the first half waiting for him to arrive and throw his hat into the new heist. Lots to like, but up there with Terminator 2 with a trailer spoiling a major twist.

whereas the ordinariness of that scene is what made it horrific, and particularly relevant to news these days, worse than any shooting

I don't do trailers either, but just checked it out and that scene is when they are heading to the van with the money before its blown up, in fact you even see his crew behind him. The trailer does briefly show him on the boat in the same scene as Farrell, which is a massive spoiler, but it would be a stretch to read to much from that if you've not seen the film.

Overlord

Not a massive marketing effort - trailer made it out to be a horror movie. Honestly genuinely impressed, kind of like r rated captain America with saving private Ryan reality. Main lead was also really good Jovan, who's had lots of bit roles (inc Jack Ryan). Had the girl out of oblivion too!

9/10 for horror/action, enjoyable.

I thought it was generally ok. Some of the shots were very well done, Colin Farrell was better than I’ve remembered him for a long time and as mentioned above Viola Davis was outstanding and Daniel kaluuya was shockingly good.

Is there a possibility kaluuya could be the next James Bond? Is Widows his Layer Cake? I could see him as a good Bond if he wanted it.

‘You Were Never Really Here’

Joaquin Phoenix in ultra gritty and violent thriller.

Similar dynamic to Leon but much darker and indeed better for the leads performance.
