not sure the female detective murder at the end added anything either - it felt a bit sensatioanlist and the script started to fall apart towards the end too I felt.
Big shame that - I liked her character and they seemed to work well together (or at least keep her investigation going while Luther was rampaging around London getting his friends and colleagues shot). Last episode was just really, really stupid. And as someone says above more like batman than anything resembling a real crime drama.
The cynics view is they gave her both barrels to avoid having to do a series of luther without luther with her as the star ala taggart.
As lenny henry said there is only a small quota of black success allowed on the bbc.
Added nothing to the story and was just spite really.
Probably why they dropped F1 as a multicultural fella was doing well.

I've just finished S3, thank heavens Alice has made a reappearance. She gives a little lighthearted humour to a cop show, otherwise taking itself too seriously.

Since no one else has opined yet can I be the first to say that, other than the humongous Netflix budget, that was ITV grade nonsense that utterly trashes the complexity of the original series. Woeful, lurid claptrap riddled with plot holes that would stretch the credulity of a twelve year old.

It's clearly intended to create an action hero franchise for Idris Elba (assuming he's out of the running for 007), lazily leveraging an existing brand.
And as for the Andy Serkis character (and performance) - panto surely beckons?

I was looking forward to this and I've heard it's bad, now I'm not sure I'll bother watching. Kermode and Mayo trashed it (with a disclaimer that Kermode hadn't seen the series)

Gutted, was looking forward to this and it sounds crap.

Is Ruth Wilson in it at least?

So disappointed in it - it did start off alright but then dropped like a stone with crap cgi and a rubbish story

Film was poor. The whole thing was too dark and gloomy.

Sums it up perfectly. Nasty, unpleasant, exploitative film with no bite whatsoever.

Your making it sound far better than it was.

What an absolute turd of a movie.

I actually enjoyed it for what it was but it wasn’t quite “Luther” as we know it! Felt very like they were trying to tee up Idris Elba (or John Luther!) for the next Bond!

I enjoyed it. Its a film for goodness sake. I woukd agree it became Luther the series caricatured in places but I liked it and it kept me focused for the two and a bit hours.

As a huge fan of the series', I was hoping for more of the same...

But, the first 5mins sets the tone for what is the most plot-holed, far-fetched, stupid, unrealistic and cringeworthy 2hrs of film I've watched in a very long time.

To write a critique of it would take days, pretty much all of it was bad. Take Idris Elba and the 'Luther' name away and it's basically something a bunch of six-formers have slung together for their media studies project.

Terrible on all counts.
