I started that thread too, and Pacific Rim which also got a (deserved) pasting hehe

What is it with film threads I start?

Anyway, please feel free to invade my 'Noah' thread where I have the feeling I'll also be joining in the slagging off.

im, I am biting back, IIRC the Disney 3D films were one I don't recall the title of with kites flying on a hillside etc. and a Michael Jackson short.
And you're seriously expecting us to believe that the 3D was as good as Gravity?

Going to see this later on today.

Would you guys recommend I take my own 3D glasses I use for my TV? (passive)
I assume you're NOT seeing the IMAX 3-D version then? If you are they'll give you the special IMAX glasses as you enter the auditorium.

Even if you're just seeing the standard 3-D version I'd err on the side of caution and just buy a pair in the cinema. Then take those every time you go to see a standard 3-D film.

I think technically Brighton would be closer as Im in Haywards Heath but it doesnt have an IMAX and the car park is st.
I'm in the Horsham area so I have no choice really.

Saw it yesterday in IMAX 3D. Amazing experience & the first film I've seen in 3D. Breathtaking visuals & effects.
9/10
If thats your first 3D film you've set the bar pretty high! I hate 3D and this (and Life of Pi) are the only films I've ever seen where it works to improve a flick.
It worked in Avatar.

Has anyone seen 'The Europa Report'? Low budget but (I thought) quite realistic and a lot less bombastic/ Hollywood than Gravity.

Yes, it deals with extraterrestrials but so does 2001 and Europa is, AFAIK, the no. 1 place other than Earth to sustain life in our Solar System.
I've seen it and frankly was disappointed. It's another 'lost footage' type film.

Every single film about space ever made has some holes in the physics...have you actually ever seen how slowly you move in zero g?

You'd have no film if you stuck to the correct physics for christs sake - the audience would grow old watching the film.

Gravity is up for 11 BAFTA awards.

Not Oscars but it's sometimes an indication...

I think in 2D on a 32" screen you miss the entire point of the production sadly. The visuals are what lift the film out from the mediocre.

I could have quite happily just sat and watched the visuals in the cinema for 90 minutes without any plot at all.
Agree, it was almost 2001-esque in it's stunning portrayal of space and I could have quite easily watched it without Ms Bullock or Clooney in tow. Yes a film is always better when the plot or script are also decent but seeing as film is a largely visual medium, I can sometimes forgive it of the other two are slightly under par IF I get treated to a feast for the eyes and this delivers in spades.
Agree 100% which is why I can't agree with Mojooo:

IMO a movie should be just an entertaining on the small screen as well as the big screen/3D.
Film is actually made for the cinema - not the TV - and it's merely a bonus if its good on the small screen.

I went to an IMAX and yes it was "epic" even with the 'average' storyline.

Not as entertaining (IMO) as 'Dark Star'. Made in 1974 on a budget of $60,000 thumbup.
Whilst I understand the cult status of that film you're hardly comparing Apples with Apples there are you. I'll grant you that re-made for todays audience the Space Hopper would be awesome in IMAX 3-D hehe
