That's the only movie I've seen at the cinema where the audience applauded at the end. Well, that & Made of Stone, but that doesn't count as the place was full of die hard fans.

A much better film was a TV Drama called Sobibor done in the 80's if I remember rightly. Schindlers list to me seemed like it was trying too hard.
Escape from Sobibor - got Rutger Hauer in it and it's actually quite good.

I've never seen Blazing Saddles all the way through. It was on Sky fairly recently so I've recorded it and will try to watch it this weekend. Not sure if it's an "epic" though!

I've never seen any Lord of the Rings films or Harry Potter. I also haven't seen any Tom Hanks films as I hate his tt face. So haven't seen Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump and all that st he made and got Oscar nominated for. I get told I'm missing out as he had made some great films, I explain that I have the same feeling toward him as I do Mackems, so I will never change my mind.

Took a minute there trying to think of a tenuous link to John McClain before it hit me.

Also not seen Schindler's List, been meaning to for a while. Fell asleep during first LOTR in the cinema so not seen any of those. Then Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind, Metropolis etc I have no time for.

Tried some more 'modern classics' like Taxi Driver and Scarface that everyone claims you 'must see' but felt they were pretty disappointing.

Raging fking Bull is a good example of this. By the end of it, I was the one raging about having lost 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. Best film ever my arse. If there was a category called "Best Black and White film about boxing that rhymes with Gauging Pull" it still wouldn't fking win. I hated it that much I decided nobody else should be forced to watch it and I threw it in the bin. Not even the recycle one - I couldn't run the risk of it escaping.

Scarface is very good though. I used to be in that DVD club (Lovefilm?) and they sent me Taxi Driver but it skipped a lot so I didn't bother watching it.

I'm pretty sure I've seen all of Apocalypse Now but never seen the whole thing in one go.

Recorded Das Boot when it was on Film 4 a few months back but not got round to watching it yet.

The Mrs decided to work through one of these "top 100 films of all time" lists some time back and watched Gone With The Wind because if it. I managed to sit through a bit of it but couldn't believe what a load of badly acted tripe it was. I find I'm really put off watching a lot of old films because what passed as acting back then is just terrible.

How charming it is to have art that you have enjoyed trampled upon by people that have either barely watched any of it or have a sort of phoney inner barrier to "mass culture"

Raging Bull is a great story. It's a beautiful film.

If you haven't sat through Apocalypse Now in one go, you'll have problems with Das Boot. I suggest a sleeping bag, thermos flask and an alarm clock. Superb film IMHO, but it does go on...and on.....and on....

If we can reverse this, I've recently seen Brief Encounter, In which we serve & every Ealing comedy ever.

All brilliant & a real window into the past.

I caught Das Boot on Film 4 about 12 months ago. It was on a Tuesday night at 9pm, so I thought I'd give it a watch as I'd never seen it.

...Except I didn't realise it was nearly FIVE fkING HOURS LONG!!!

It got to about 11pm and I'm wondering why it hasn't finished, as I need to get to bed due to work in the morning. I then check to see what time it ends; nearly 2am in the fking morning!

Of course by that time I was bloody commited to the film. I ended up watching the whole thing and being a wreck at work the next day frown

Good Man, In Which We Serve is a fantastic little film, one of my favourites.

Where to start - I've never really been into films.

Never seen a film with Tom Cruise in.
Not seen any Lord of the rings.
Only seen the original Star Wars film.
Never seen the Great Escape.
Not seen The Wizard of Oz.
Not seen The Matix.
Not seen a James Bond film since the early Eighties.
Can't stand cowboy films, sci fi or horror.

You get the picture.

I do like good comedy and gangster films.

I was informed on the good films thread that Das Boot can only be watched late at night when you're knackered, and preferably when you haven't had a shower for a week, have the heating on full and only have mouldy bread in the house to eat. biggrin

I watched all of it and I've got no phoney inner barrier to "mass culture". I've watched a lot of the films (Apocalypse Now, Harry Potter, Schindlers List, Forrest Gump etc) mentioned on this thread and enjoyed them (apart from LOTRmad). I'm not someone who doesn't like something that's popular to try and look "cool". I just thought Raging Bull was st.
