It was obvious they wanted the Honda to win that test. I thought they were going to come unstuck when they realised they couldn't reject the Mini because of its poor range, so they mumbled something about the front end instead. smile

Very much so.

Why do they have to get rid of 2 of the cars, just because they feel the worst round a track? Keep them in to the end.

The Zoe may not be the best drive, but it has the longest range, has a good spec, 5 doors, a bit boot, is the cheapest if you actually go near a dealer.

The 2012 Zoe was doing 100 miles when it was realeased, yet they crowned the Honda the winner with a realistic 120mi range?

That won't last long if you do drive it enthusiastically all the time.

It may be the nicest to drive and the nicest to look at, but to most new EV buyers, range and price is king.

They kept going on about 'city' cars, but they rejected some on the basis of track handling. They didn't consider turning circle, visibilty or parking.

Yep, totally agree

For what an EV buyer currently needs, especially those with a family, it was just geared towards the wrong criteria.

Buy a Zoe (and ignore the NCAP rating, lol) and buy an MX5 for thrills if you need that as well.

Until they produce a hot hatch EV or 2 seater convertible that Joe Public can afford, why judge any EV round a track?

We're not at that point of development yet.

Actually that is exactly what I have done.

The Zoe is perfect for round town and even medium length journeys, costing damn all to run and being nice and warm on a winter’s morning from the automatic pre-heating.

And the MX5 for the summer or whenever the sun is shining.
Same here, but I've got the original Zoe

Owned from new and 5 years old in Jan beer

But is it a rented battery version?

The track test doesn't seem all that relevant to the qualities desired in an EV.

It should probably be replaced with an hour at 50 in the middle lane then 2 hours hanging out a motorway services freak show. But the MG Owners Club own the rights to that test.

I am finding it very intersting. They are quite open and honest about the fact that an ev isn't for everyone. I don't get the hate for them. I now run a 50 miles total commute on a rather boring dual carriageway with a load of urban schlep at one end, an ev would be perfect for me...indeed, such are the 'greenwashing' tactics employed by local authoroties, if my school fitted some chargers which may be a possibility, other council buildings have them, I might look EV for my next car. Smooth, low maintenance, preheated cabin, sounds perfect. I think many miss the point, if you need a hammer for a job, you buy a hammer, of you need a screwdriver, you buy a screwdriver, you don't look at the job you know needs a screwdriver, think about buying a hammer and complain about the hammers ineptitude for the job you needed done. Seems simple.. ev works for some, not others?

I agree with you both - sadly however EVs have been mandated by the powers that be so we'll have to stick on a st eating grin and go along with it. There is, currently, no other way...
Don't watch shows about EVs and don't buy an EV? A bit like gay sex. Lots of it about but why would you dive in to sausage TV and sausage coddling if you weren't into sausages? Or like ITV is aimed at the less intelligent and educated members of society but watching is optional.
don't misunderstand me, unlike sausage coddling, I still quite enjoy watching 5th Gear Recharged. It is actually quite interesting with an insight into something that (sooner or later) i'll likely be looking into. To echo what many have said the whole racing round a test-track in a city car seemed a little pointless but hey-ho c'est la vie, the Enyaq seemed genuinely useful, the 4*4 thingy was useful/practical (but eff me not cheap!)

Interesting feature comparing an ICE Defender against that Tesla-powered 90 from Electric Classic Cars. Also visited Arrival who had a very Amazon-like automated factory - can’t say the prototype looked that amazing.

Saw the Defender at the NEC last month. It did look very well finished. JdV really needs to paint the rear crossmember on his too !

I was always pretty fond of Tiff, he was one of the better ones- and I’ve just realised I miss him in this. de Ville, Reid- just a bit meh. I love Chandhok on the F1 coverage and he’s good with Plato but he’s just not a car journo.

I heard Tiff talk about this on Chris Harris’ podcast. They should have just continued him. He is, thinking about it, probably the best at taking mundane cars and handling them in a fun way. Not long ago I watched an old Fifth Gear and he managed to make some entry level shopping cars and a car park watchable.

Also I can’t help but raise an eyebrow at a very positive review for a new MG when MG are bookending segments with their sponsor adverts.

All of that said, I am enjoying watching it and learning about EV options. I can’t imagine buying one in the next 10 years but they are at least relevant.

Watching on +1 just now.

Anyone that says it's a good looking car is lying. The front is horrible.

I have my British MG fail bias which I must be aware of but if I were being kind to it I’d say it just looks a bit 2013 in terms of exterior design and finish… and not 2013 VW or Toyota, but 2013 Kia.

I must confess, a friend asked me if she should get an MG EV company car and I kind of scoffed at it because it’s MG and it’s Chinese but maybe they are technically ok?

I agree the exterior looked like an older Korean effort. The interior looked fine.

Isn't £31k for a near 300 mile range electric car on the lower side? I'm assuming cheapness is the attraction?

I quite enjoyed 5th Gear when it was just Stiff, Plato, VBH and Johnny Smith.....but it dropped off hugely in quality when they sacked Needles and brought in the idiot from Gob-Off Garage, and Chandhok who sadly ticks a box and offers nothing else.

Now it's gone EV, I've not even bothered with it.
Yep not so good without Tiff, to the point of not worth watching it anymore have no interest in buying an ev yet .

Episode 4 was made all the more enjoyable by the emphasis on performance, hydrogen alternatives and no Jimmy de Vagina.
