One of my favourite of recent times is The Business - Probably something about the way they captured the 80s theme very well and it's quite funny in parts too...

I disagree about Once Upon A Time In America. I watched it recently for the first time as I had it down on my list of 'All Time Classics - Must See' and was hugely disappointed with the over-long & turgid piece of self indulgent film-making that unfolded.
Don't worry, I doubt you were as disappointed as me. A woeful piece of cinema best forgotten.

For me, Casino is the best gangster film overall. If you could call Sexy Beast a gangster film, and I suppose it is as it's about gangsters, then I guess that's my second favourite. Not many good English ones to go on, I suppose The Crew would be my favourite of recent home-grown films even if it does contain an irritating amount of shouting. Then again, it has Stephen Graham, one of the best actors of our generation IMO.

Loving the reverse psychology angle, lol. Worked up not in the least. Kisses back.

I see the few who dispute the merits of Once Upon A Time favour the more fictional aspirations of Goodfellas. Yeah great film as entertainment goes. But then all suffer from being somewhat unbelievable.

Perhaps this is why Get Carter has to be the greatest gangster film ever, as it could so easily be real in every way. It probably gets my vote as cinematography goes.

Isn't Goodfellas a true story? And which bits are unbelievable?

Goodfellas is one of the few mainstream films that shows believable violence, rather than the yawn-fest gunfights and explosions and ridiculous gore that Hollywood loves so much. E.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgD--h93364

All valid points...except ... Goodfellas fictional? In comparison with every other film mentioned it was a real story. Jazzed up, no doubt, but very much based on real events and involving (some) real people.

You adore Once upon a time, we get it, I love it too but it has some big flaws...Goodfellas has flaws too but it's all subjective, and from where I'm sitting you started the niggling in response to someone's perfectly valid opinion you happen to disagree with.

My sister worked on Donnie Brasco....the real Donnie Brasco was an adviser on the film. The film is an awful lot more low key than it was in real life...

Wholly agree with that sentiment.

For me Get Carter is sublime.
Goodfellas, Casino, The Long Good Friday, The Godfather series, Carlito's Way, Blow, The Roaring Twenties, White Heat, Dillenger, Angels With Dirty Faces all ace

edit, Miller's Corssing, that is ace!

Nothing like the real story or the real people. Mafia were not good looking gun toting party animals with money. They were fat ugly badly dressed blokes with big ego's and some self proclaimed importance eked out with and by violence and violent lifestyle. Glamorised by Hollywood beyond all recognition.

Please do pipe down. I don't love it at all. I don't love any film or movie. Movie actors for the most are self centred pretentious overpaid nobody's. But Once Upon A Time was not based on a very very broad and glorified true story as portrayed Hollywood style. It was a script written as a piece of social history which is probably why as fiction it worked much better as a piece of social history rather than a glorified load of bullst made to be so so it became very entertaining, such was Goodfellas.

But isn't that what makes a good film to watch?

I take it back - compared to that, Once Upon A Time In America is a masterpiece...

God forbid that a film be entertaining.

Re: Goodfellas "In comparison" I said, to the accusation that it was "fictional aspirations". Regardless of the entirely moot point about anyone being good looking, I'm right, you're wrong based on the fact that Goodfellas isn't aspirational and neither is it in comparison with the other films mentioned fictional.

I echo the comment about a film being made for entertainment?! God forbid.

Alright girlfriend, calm down. You're making some fair points wrapped up in an attitude that demeans them. Yet again you've missed the point of someone's post and seem to not recognise you "started" it. If you don't love it and wonder at the responses to what you've written, take a look at your posts and ask yourself why people have responded in the way that they have.

You had a pop at someone for stating their view of a "script written as a piece of social history" (made me laugh..like it's in any way shape or form less all the things you accuse/deride Goodfellas of being) that didn't chime with your view and when they pointed out your unwarranted, and wholly misplaced, condescension, you tried to turn it back on them (and failed, quite spectacularly, but very amusingly).

Jesus, for someone clearly well educated you don't half lack the empathy to realise people can have different views on something without resorting to insults.

Goodfellas not a true portrayal of events and circumstances which actually happened as a whole. Film simply based on non fiction book written about three gangsters. Most of the script improvised. Some events happened. Some didn't. Very entertaining as it was, I enjoyed it immensely. Several times in fact. Likely will again too. Scorsese's a great director.
