I'm actually enjoying the slow burn build up, think it's setting the tone nicely.
My wife and I both commented the episodes seem too short which is a sign we are enjoying it as we are thirsty for more.
I do have a couple of questions though, how can Rios the pilot afford a warp capable ship which looks pretty advanced? Surely they don't just build\give ships to just anyone, especially someone with a sketchy Starfleet history. Did he buy it? If so how, they don't have money and even if they did, how did Rios get enough to buy a ship.
Secondly how is Picard paying for his services? Again no money in 24th Century? They mention a few times about him not being cheap? How does Picard have money?
That whole find a pilot who just so happens to own a very slick, warp capable ship and is willing to boldly go off into a dangerous adventure at the drop of a hat is a bit "convenient"

They say the goal of man is no longer the accumulation of wealth and while they mention that no one needs money its clear some form of currency is required, Trading with the Ferengi for example requires Latinum. I would imagine there would be a credits based system still required but I can also imagine it not really relating to what we would know as money.
We know little from outside the Federation/races we know in the Trek verse, I can very much imagine there being places one could be less reputable and earn a "living"
Of course, I could be completely wrong but as an example look at Into Darkness with the smuggler ship they seized.
You are all forgetting TNG episodes were about the same length just they would start at 17:03 then 3 breaks of 4 mins and a break to the next program at the end.
They have built a decent base of stories to be explained.
The synthetics
The borg
The romulan connection
B4 also what happened to Lore Datas brother is he involved with this?
Plenty of other stories to develop as well how are the Klingon empire getting on
"Engage" was a nice cheesey practically looking at the camera line but it works.

Obviously money exists and is still used otherwise how would Picard afford to run the vineyards? How would people pay for his wine? Or Sisko's Dad be able to afford to run the Earth based restaurant in DS9? not like he gives free meals away to everyone.
DS9 is sort of a special case as it's basically a border frontier trading post so they use money for some things. In fact I think they mention this a few times in DS9. I'm pretty sure Sisko gets into a few arguments
with the Ferengi over the use of money initially but comes round to the idea.
I don't think it's representative of what the rest of the Federation do which is pretty much no money. However like with a lot of things in ST, while the basic premise sounds good, it's very wishy washy when you get into the nuts and bolts of it. How do you convince Stan the toilet cleaner that he's not going to get paid anything but he is "bettering himself" when he's unblocking Worf's toilet for the third time in a week.

No money, all transactions are done by sexual favours.
No wonder Ben Sisko's Dad is so upbeat all the time... his restaurant always seems busy Guvernator said:

The idea is that humanity has bettred themselves and no longer chase monetary things. everyone has clean living quarters replicators to provide anything you need.with the Ferengi over the use of money initially but comes round to the idea.

I imagine most undesirable jobs have been automated or just engineered out of society.
The federation maybe is Socialism in it's truest form?

So anyone who fancies some of JL's wine can just teleport over and help themselves?I imagine most undesirable jobs have been automated or just engineered out of society.

I imagine the federation future is one when the annual purge of the poor has has the effect of wiping out the poor

I was shocked to learn Jeri Ryan who plays 7 of 9 is 51 now! From the trailers she still looks good but that was a bit of a blow tbh.

I'm not saying that.I imagine the federation future is one when the annual purge of the poor has has the effect of wiping out the poor
JL's vineyard has a fixed output. If the whole of the Federation wants a bottle most of them are going to be disappointed.
Normally that would be solved by setting a price where supply meets demand.

I know what you meant. I'm guessing everyone is so honest they dont beam in and steal a bottle just accept that if they get a bottle as a gift good otherwise no worries about having a repliated substitute not quite as good but good enough.
That raises the opposite problem. There are only so many bottles he can gift and he has to get rid of the output or store it. Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
