It's interesting re-watching the Season 2 trailer again as you can now filter out all the scenes you've watched already and spot all the upcoming spoilers for the final episode.

FUN. The word you’re looking for is fun.

And I’d actually say it’s the exact opposite of self indulgent, it was self deprecating and light hearted.
Exactly. A lot of sci-fi takes itself way too seriously these days, and doesn’t think it’s right unless it’s dark, gritty and distopian. This was a brilliant antidote to that, as way as providing some key nuggets and Easter eggs that move the story on…

- Chapel getting the fellowship with the man she eventually falls in love with.
- Betel going on a dangerous mission, setting us up for the Gorn encounter from the trailers.
- Spock’s reaction to rejection from Chapel moving him from the more emotional Spock we see now to the colder, analytical one in the future
- James Kirk’s mention of his relationship with Carol Marcus and that she’s pregnant with his son.

I'm amazed at how many people liked this musical episode, personally I found it cringe worthy and couldn't watch more than 15 minutes (and I like most musicals.
I agree - although I don't like any musicals.

Obviously they did the musical episode for FUN. No other reason for a musical with humour in it. Some liked it, some hated it. There have been some FUN episodes I enjoyed because of the humour. But as I don't like musicals on TV and the quality of some of the songs in this episode were awful, never mind the autotuning, it worked best with some of the numbers being skipped through. My wife likes musicals more than me and she was telling me to use the skip button...

Then there would have been no point watching it. The lyrics of the songs told the story of the episode.

We managed just fine - not like the plot was really difficult to follow! laugh And as I said, we skipped SOME of the songs. And not all the the songs were critical to the plot.

I maintain it was self indulgent. All actors love to show their range so I’d imagine they were dead keen on the idea. Nice for the show runner too.
I don’t like reality shows or period costume drama much either. So I don’t want h them. If I want to laugh I’ll watch a comedy. I appreciate this was likely an experimental episode of sorts. I just didn’t like it at all.
I would add, this series has really suffered from the relative lack of focus on Pike.

I've really enjoyed the episodes focusing on the other characters tbh, it's just a shame it's only 10 episodes. With previous series, you've had 20 odd eps to cover the crew so it's understandable that they've had to take the focus off Pike. Plus, I think they did an exceptional job of setting him up with the whole issue of him knowing his fate.

I think SNW has some of the strongest supporting cast we've seen in a series for a while now and it's good they're getting space to develop them.

I still preferred S1 - think I was put off by the first few episodes. I am going to rewatch the time travel episode and give that one another chance.

But I agree there are lots of excellent characters in the series.

I am really enjoying season 2. Episode 9 what a blast. But an improbability field. Now I wonder where they got that idea from.

S1 perhaps had that "Thank God its more like ST and not Discovery" factor to an extent. But yeah I did too. However, they do have a very good ensemble cast - if the scriptwriters have the talent to get the most of them.

Can't say any of that was unexpected, bit of pew pew, bit of peril and more cameo pieces slowly slotting into the crew we're used to.

It's going to be a long wait till season 3 frown

Just watched it...

Agree with the above, none of it was unexpected and I was starting to feel a little let down when I realised we were almost at the end and it would be a two-parter. Scotty turning up was a nice surprise, didn't think we'd get him so soon. Embarrassingly took me a few seconds after he started talking to realise who he was going to be should have known straight away! I like the fact we saw an adult Gorn finally, looked pretty cool. It was an ok episode but I really feel a but let down they've ended on such a cliffhanger given this whole series was building to the Gorn. The episode was well one but none of the stakes paid off in this episode. It wasn't like one of the classic DS9 two-parters where each episode stood on its own (or even Best of Both World or others from TNG).

Looking forward to Season 3 but I feel given the current strikes it is a long long way off now.

I can remember TNG season 3 ended on the cliffhanger of Riker ordering Worf to fire on Picard as Locutus - and then having to wait months until S4. That was bad enough (and a bit of a letdown when it did!).

This is going to be rather longer, I guess... A year...18 months? Sheesh.

Yup, whole crew acting together - each excelling at doing what they do...

The scene with it hanging upside down behind Spock - did the composition remind anyone else of a certain other film?

I thought it was pretty good, much better than last week.

I thought it was strange to go with the Simon Pegg version of Scotty and not the James Doohan original.

And the scene with Betel going nose to nose with the Horn youngling.

They’re a blatant rip off. I struggle with them as a species too. How they evolved to be tool using and build space ships when as youngsters they just eat each other is beyond even the usual suspension of disbelief that Star Trek requires.

Well that was more like ST I remember. Excellent. Decision to leave it on a cliff hanger with over a year to wait for the conclusion - not so much. But that was the best of season 2 for me.
