Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.

Don't normally watch this sort of stuff but was pleasantly surprised. Best IMF movie so far and noticeably better than any recent Bond films. Stunts and action sequences had an original edge you don't get with tired conventional fodder. During the superbly photographed sportsbike chase through the Atlas foothills the riders were shown actually getting their knees down and aerial shots conveyed a real sense of speed. It's an impressive set piece.

Good. 7.5/10
Do you need to have seen the other Mission Impossible films to get the most out of it? I haven't seen any.

Not really. There are a few 'in' jokes, but the plot works well as a standalone. The premise is that there's a secret spy organisation (IMF - Cruise et al.), working alongside, but separate to, the CIA. Some IMF die-hards believe members of their organisation have 'gone rogue'. That's it.

Ta.

I saw Jurassic World last night. Pretty good if you like marvelling at dinosaurs and the animation is excellent. I enjoyed the some of the chasing and stalking scenes, but you are never going to beat the scene in the first Jurassic Park when the kids were hiding from the velociraptors in the kitchen! The story should have been a lot better and was a bit of a let down. If you are going to genetically engineer a dinosaur, I'm sure they could have come up with something more imaginative than a big T-Rex/Velociraptor/chameleon cross, but I enjoyed it overall.

Watched The Walk today with low expectations. Turned out to be carefully crafted little film. Chose it against Crimson Peak. 7/10

Whiplash. I had my doubts going into it, but I was superb.

I'm off to buy a drum kit.

Pixels

Good fun for all the family, might not appeal if you aren't or weren't into playing video games in your youth. It's something I've always enjoyed doing so it was right up my street, loved all the references to the old games I even saw Paperboy make a brief appearance! I thought all the pixel special effects looked great and it was plenty funny enough in parts.

Predictable brain off escapism with some comedy thrown in, exactly what this type of film should be and done well IMO.

7/10

Interesting for a while but ultimately too many themes that have been done before. Like the space ships etc but just felt like a lot of films put together.

5/10

The andromeda strain 1971

What an awesome film this is. Amazing how it still stands up today IMO. It's 44 years old.
They just don't make films like this any more.

For Christ's sake don't start going there. smile

Going to more than one decimal place made some posters heads explode!

With the '110% phenomenon' as I call it, it only goes one way:

In the 90's Fergie would say his players gave 110%. Over the years, that crept up. Now, on X-Factor, Simon Cowell will tell someone they are '1,000,000% through to the next round.'

Once you crank it up to 11, there's no going back...

We've got to keep at least some standards here...

You've convinced me though - I've been considering it for years - onto the Lovefilm list. smile

Make sure it's the original. Please ignore the remake and I would suggest not reading about it watch it with fresh eyes.

Self/Less. Watchable thriller.

Americathon. 1978 satire that fairly accurately predicted aspects of life today.

Class of 1999. Classic crap.

The 110% thing annoys me. I used to have a manager who asked how much percentage I would give, expecting a response like 110. I would usually say 40%, since it couldn't be 100, as I would die and the body needs a lot of energy to perform it's jobs and to continue existing. I theorised around 40% is the most anyone can give to any job whilst still living. So I was giving the most I physically could, he never really got my reasoning. biggrin

Watched a lot of films over the last week or so, including all Star Wars, The Gambler, Million Dollar Arm, The Martian, Everest, few others.

By far the highlight for me was The Theory Of Everything. Film about Stephen Hawking's life, played by a quite fankly brilliant Eddie Redmayne. Excellent film!
