Films I watched this week (Vol 2)
Discussion
Red Sparrow. An honest return of the cold war genre. A world away from the overly slick Atomic Blonde and all the better for it.
Kind of formulaic storyline with no real surprises, but an enjoyable interpretation nonetheless. Some of the implied violence was, er, violent and even the thought of the use of one of the tools of torture actually made me squirm in my seat.
All part of the movie-going experience.![thumbup](/inc/images/thumbup.gif)

Has anyone else seen this? The trailer looked quite good...
I haven't seen it, but I do have a feeling this will end up having a healthy cult following like Dredd, and will do very well on the DVD/BR market. As I understand it, the 'professional reviewers' do not like it because they perceive it as being too right wing/pro gun - to them, the film sends the 'wrong message'. This is why there is a massive disparity between scores on RT - much like 2016's Ghostbusters and TLJ, which went the other way regarding user and paid reviewer scores. The latter can no longer be trusted to give unbiased reviews.
A sleepless night in an uncomfortable hotel bed led to me watching, back-to-back...
A Few Best Men (2011). Kris Marshall stole every scene, it was utterly dreadful and completely infantile, but I enjoyed it on a very bizarre level.
The Lady Vanishes (1938). Alfred Hitchcock, Margaret Lockwood, Michael Redgrave. A true "classic" of British cinema, right? Errrrrm. Nope. It was the biggest load of tripe I think I've ever watched. No real plot, no real suspense, no real drama nor any excitement to speak of. Just a load of British twits on a foreign railway trip. It just looked like so much pre-war propaganda to me, and was all the worse for it. If you haven't seen this one, I'd advise you not to bother, as it'll be 96 minutes of your life you'll never get back...
...and as a fan of stuff like The Third Man, and The 39 Steps, South By Southwest, etc, I went into it really wanting to like it.![frown](/inc/images/frown.gif)

I watched a Danish movie, “A Hijacking” on TV earlier this week, I had recorded it from a movie channel on Sky.
It’s about a Danish cargo ship being hijacked in the Indian Ocean by Somali pirates, and the consequent negotiations between Omar, the English speaking rep for the pirates, and the Danish ship owners in Copenhagen.
It’s in English and Danish, with English subtitles, quite moving, and well acted, 8/10.

Funny story, I was actually watching this on iPlayer about 18 moths ago, and, it actually passed it's 'view by date' on iPlayer, and it just cut off in the middle of the film!? What are the chances? Ha.
I was really enjoying it too.

23 days to go
A HIJACKING
Certainly did - watched it last night and really enjoyed it.
You see why some guys who take real responsibility earn big bucks.
8 pirates out of 10.
Incidentally gave up on the latest Saturday night BBC4 offering - a scandi Taking of Pelham 123. Done before by Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw, and later with John Travolta, both versions quick and to the point, and better imho.

Can't believe we live in a world where something like this doesn't get a UK cinema release. Beautiful and haunting and some of the best sound design I've experienced. Watch it via the best possible means.

Which is the best unbiased revue site? does one exist?
Not sure if pun or spelling mistake.Question still stands with the correct word. Thanks for pointing that out by the way, I dislike making mistakes.

I'm not sure how such a thing can exist, even if somehow films were reviewed automatically by some sort of universally agreed algorithm. In any case, according to the internet ALL reviewers are being paid off by Disney. I guess the cheques stopped arriving though as their latest $100m movie (directed by a black woman, no less) has not reviewed at all well across the board.Far better to seek out a reviewer who your tastes appear to align with. I don't bother reading reviews before watching movies any more (and I try to avoid trailers too), going in cold is in my opinion the best way to enjoy any film.

Holy moly I need to watch it again before offering any sort of rating. Quite high concept sci fi, and I think it'll benefit from repeat viewings.
What I will say is that I was gripped from start to finish. As above, the sound is terrific. A couple of really properly memorable scenes. This is not in the same dimension as the guff that is The Circle, and The Cloverfield Paradox.

I look at Rotten tomatoes for a general consensus and Empire Online are normally pretty spot on
I often look on Tomatoes but recently realised that I don't agree with them on a lot of films. Here is an example of the different opinions of "experts" and the gen public.

OK, not the best but a bang on Friday night film that deserves more than the offered 39% given by the toms.
