Have to agree, struggled to watch a whole episode. Format hasn't been given a great deal of thought, the 'Ask Edd' bit is weird and doesn't give great or even useful answers half the time. Whole thing is just a bit weird, flat and dull.

Compare to Mat Armstrong for instance - his stuff is good enough to go on TV, and he is so much more entertaining regardless of what you think about what he does to the cars you enjoy watching anyway.

Just watched episode 5. Still scratching my head. The more I see of the Range Rover the worse it looks. I can't imagine it ever reaching the point where it would pass a MOT. And still the same ultra-slow pacing and funereal music. But the comments on YT indicate that the fans are still quite rapt.

I think Edd is confused about his target audience.

On the one hand he tries to explain how things work but not in enough detail for the novice and too much detail for the average DIY'er. TAke his explanation of how the clutch works as an example. I doubt the uninitiated would follow it but I found it a bit basic.

Also the long shots of Edd with his arms stuck up under a Range Rover add nothing especially when the camera points directly into the light. Perhaps its the Director's attempt at some artsy shots but it just doesn't work.

The "postbag" section is just strange, answering inane and irrelevant questions.

It could be good but it needs an overhaul IMHO.

I see there are a few walking Haynes manuals quick to denigrate Edd.

You are fundamentally missing the point. Much like James May's BBC reassembler venture, the knowledge is a distant second to simply watching Edd. It's relaxing, and very, very rare to find in the immediate nature of today's society.

Much like practical classics used to be, tea stains and all, it's never about the finished product, good or (very often) ill. It's about the process.

I tried the first couple of these and rapidly lost the will to live, I like Edd and it’s good to see him back but I really can’t see what the audience is as mentioned above. I’ve got more enjoyment watching Hubnut who has absolutely zero mechanical finesse.

I've been watching the YouTube videos, I'm not 100% into them, they're a bit... odd. The questions bit is useless. The Range Rover is a wreck with a lot more going on than fixing the fuel lines to get it past an MOT. I'll keep watching it, but it's not on the essential list.

The camera work / direction is far too arty farty for me
But I did find the last video more entertaining than the earlier one, Edd's current presentation style somewhere between dull & patronising, it might be the content though.
Maybe what he needs is a cheerful tubby bloke interrupting every so often to chivvy things along.

It needs a bit of tweaking and a bit of an injection of “fizz” for me, but it could be great. Have missed him on TV, so find it worthwhile watching, but it’s not quite hitting the sweet spot for me yet.

Hubnut is great. Crap cars, crap repairs. I love it. Plus he doesn't take himself too seriously. No arty farty shots and certainly no high production value but he presents a bloody everyday boring car with interest and has a great way of captivating your attention.

Gets very samey and I stopped watching when, for a while, it became all about him rather than the cars and repair/bodges. Hope he's gone back to being about the cars.

I think that was the lockdown causing lack of viewing ideas. A new museum opening, story of the A series engine and the Sinclair C5 certainly (I know sad eh?) keeps me interested.

The excessive product placement will get real old, real fast. As will the rather bizarre padding...

Rusty, rusty fuel line. Most people would grab the snips and whip that junk out in 10 minutes. Not our Edd.

First, jerry rig a manual switch for the fuel pump, so we can spray fuel all over the floor.
Next, quick shot of the brand new HYDROVANE COMPRESSOR
Blow some air through the line for some reason. Yep, it's still fked.
Remove the line while apparently trying to keep the line and clips intact.

Underbonnet time.

Jubilee clip to remove? Be sure to spray everything within 20ft with XCP PENETRATING FLUID.
Pop back a minute later and rip it off with pliers.

And so on.

Episode 6 just released, and I don't know if the production team read this thread but the whole programme has noticeably picked up the pace. No more excruciating lingering shots of watching Edd struggle to undo a bolt for two minutes. It's a lot more choppy and has more energy to it and was actually quite a good watch IMO.

I've been enjoying it somewhat, its always good to have some car content come out, but the bit with the switch was boring! I'll keep watching it but hope it picks up a little.

Product placement will get boring fast.
