A bit hypocritical wouldn’t you say. Haven’t you bashed the Orville at every opportunity? And why are you bringing up the Orville once again on the Star Trek thread
Start a thread for it, if one doesn’t already exist, and see how many posts I make on it..
I've not managed a full episode of Orville yet, but really growing into Discovery. This week's episode was a cracker - sure, not the most original plot device, but good pacing, some proper humour and character, nods to the old series and a satisfying ending.
There's a review/comparison on YouTube between the two series that seems to sum it up for me - the Orville is 90's television: content to serve up shiny happy episodes that don't require much thought or attention. Star Trek is 2017 - from a more gritty story arc to lens flare. Neither really move on the legacy of Trek, but each references it in its own way.
So far, Discovery looks like it'll have longer staying power. If they can begin to lay the foundations of the optimistic vision that TOS had, it'll make a good show. If they stick with the slightly off-tone 'war is hell' theme for the whole duration, it'll get boring.

Yes, E7 was pure and classic Star Trek.
Looks like Mudd could be the 'Q' like character. Looking on IMDb he appears in four episodes, so two down, two to go....
And Saru could go onto Red Dwarf and be best mates with Rimmer where they could quote Space Corps / Starfleet directives to one another !

I'll put a spoiler in just in case Seeing as Mudd first appeared in the original Star Trek, I thought it was very apt to have a slightly humorous episode as a homage to the original series.Looks like Mudd could be the 'Q' like character. I'm really enjoying Discovery. Captain Lorca has become a firm favourite for me and Mrs G and the other character are developing well.

I’d be happy to see more of him. Looks like Mudd could be the 'Q' like character. Looking on IMDb he appears in four episodes, so two down, two to go....
Apparently, in the ‘60s they were considering a Harry Mudd spin-off series.
From this site …
According to Walter Koenig, NBC briefly considered making a spin-off series centered around the adventures of Harry Mudd, as the character proved to be popular, but these plans were quickly abandoned. Mudd actor Roger C. Carmel learned of the idea from Gene Roddenberry, at a going-away party Desilu gave Herb Solow, after TOS was cancelled. Carmel subsequently recalled, "Gene said, 'It's a shame that series thing for you never worked out.' I said, 'What series thing?' He said, 'Oh, didn't you know!? Well, after the successful Harry Mudd episodes [in TOS], NBC wanted to know if I would develop a spin-off series for you starring the Harry Mudd character. A space pirate, intergalactic con-man kind of thing.' 'My God, Gene, I didn't know anything about that! What happened?' He said, 'Well, the artists didn't have enough time to develop it.' And of course, you couldn't blame Gene, he didn't want to let somebody take it off in a direction he didn't approve of. Since he didn't have time to handle it all, the Mudd series project died. But it was a real blow to me, because that was the first time I had heard of it. But what a great chance that would have been for me to star in my own spin-off series."
Still not really warming to the characters much. Tilly - dizzy, unconfident cadet girl - doesn't do much but annoy, really. Michael seems very "modern sci-fi generic, strong female lead". Lorca is the most interesting, I think.
I think Next Gen did the time loop thing far better - this one seemed very hurried. Looking forward to someone putting Mudd away somewhere for 10 years so he doesn't come back until TOS...

I too am enjoying Captain Lorca. Reminds me of another anti-hero, Avon, from Blakes 7.
Lorca is not a egotistical knobber though Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
