Marmite films, for sure.

Coming to them cold, you'd almost certainly complain of wooden acting and a stilted and awkward script.

If you understand that the story is, in itself, an essay in political philosophy, it would go some way to explaining the nature of the script (less so the quality of the acting!)

If you understand that the key messages are lifted directly from the 1957 novel of the same name, thereby coming across as incongruous in the 'near future' setting and contemporary language of the film, you'll really start to appreciate the depth of the philosophy.

And if, like me, your heart flutters at the wonder of people who aren't ashamed to promote and be proud of capitalism and libertarianism, and to show socialism and communism for the wretched ideologies that they are, you may well just love these films, and set aside all the obvious weaknesses and incongruities.

For me it's a 9/10. Though I accept that my judgment may be clouded by my own favour for Ms Rand's product.

Atlas Shrugged III will be filmed later this year for summer 2014 release.
My thoughts exactly. Just watched them on Virgin on demand (part 1 only available for a few more days) and thoroughly enjoyed them simply because it's so refreshing to see a film where 'businessman' doesn't equal 'villain', and written by people who realise that economics isn't a zero sum game.

Dialogue is poor I agree, but certainly no worse than the book. The budget was obviously a problem. But worth watching for all that. One critic described them as 'mediocre, but the best mediocre films ever made' and he had a point.

Captain America 2 - well as far as the super-hero genre goes it's got to be a 10. For 'just a film' it's still an 85%. Not exactly subtle in the point it's making but when it's this enjoyable who cares

Why do you think it didn't win?
I think because 12 Years was the perfect subject matter with the perfect director to be lauded so we could all feel good about ourselves. Anyway, not really important but Nebraska is definitely worth making the effort to see.

I watched both films fairly recently - had never heard of Ayn Rand until i watched a fascinating and strange TV series ("All watched over by machines of loving grace" - download it, its brilliant) and was really interested in her ideas, then found they had started on a trilogy. Shame that all the actors are different in Part2. The film got a lot of criticism that a future society still thinks of trains as futuristic travel, but it didnt bother me.

Anyway - films ive watched in the past week:

Mandela - Long Road to freedom
Reasonable biopic, i didnt know much about the man. Elba was good - it made me forgive him for Pacific Rim. 6/10

Paris, Texas
Kurt Cobains fave movie apparently - i kinda felt like blowing my brains out too afterwards. Beautifully shot, some funny and tender moments throughout, but maybe just 30 mins too long and the later scenes in the peep show did seem to drag on. 7/10

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
I wanted to watch some Bill Murray films and this was described as a comedy - also has a big name supporting cast. A comedy? Well, no - lighthearted at best, no real gags, just a quirky set of characters on a Moby-Dick-esque voyage to find and kill a huge shark that ate Murray's best friend and colleague. 5/10

Another Earth
On the night that an exact duplicate of Earth is discovered, getting closer to us, a girl who is drink-driving kills a musician's wife and child. After her prison sentence she looks him up and tries to make amends for her mistake, with him unaware. Meanwhile a competition is run to decide who will be the first people to travel to earth 2. Like "Never let me go" or "Womb/Clone", its SciFi, but the SciFi is secondary to the human story, which is very sad, and fans of those films will like this (also fans of Donnie Darko possibly). Music is good too - only criticism is some of the camera work is a bit iffy - opting at times for documentary-style jerky cam and weird zooms, which doesnt fit with the film - though it is a low-budget movie.
Ending is a bit strange and open to interpretation, hence many arguments on IMDB. 8/10

The Rise - Netflix....deserves it's 4 stars. Northern lads want revenge on local 'big-man' and hatch a 'heist'....had me gripped. 7.7/10

Watched the GSP film last night, didn't know much about the man but was left with alot of respect for him.

Perhaps too many arty scenes of wildlife but a good watch none the less.

7/10

Went to watch Noah with a mate yesterday. Wouldn't particularly recommend it. He seemed like a sanctimonious "holier than thou" tt to be honest hehe

Noah- absolutly dire. Please do not waste your money or time. If we hadn't been sat in the middle of a long row in a full cinema (others conned like us with the hype and names of actors in the film) we would have left.

Magic ficton/fantasy(ish) with very poor CGI given that its 2014, plus poor acting by people who can do a lot better. It had the potential to be a truly great epic given the subject, but failed miserably.

One of the few times I have felt duped (another being Blair Witch). You get 3 score years and 10, don't waste 2.5 hrs on this tripe.

ps Noah wasn't a good builder he got rock things to do it for him.

I have heard this a lot, even our friends said it was crap, yet it's getting good reviews!

I'd probably give it a 5.5-6/10 not great, but not terrible. Good idea not exicuted very well and the last 25 mins let it down the most. Very poor action sequences.

Did the reviewers all have white sticks? Believe me it is c-rap. The old Charlton Heston Moses type films from the 60's have more merit, and compare for special effect quality...nearly. In fact I would watch a Charlton Heston biblical epic over this excuse for film entertainment anyday.

Can I have my money back please and a consideration for wasting my time. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being best I would give it -473
