Nolan keeps getting away with it. I think there was a BBC drama doc about this a few years back that was much better.
If this one had been made in the cynical 70s we would have had most of the film about the pompous advance into europe and the beating and retreat that followed rather than all the hanging around waiting to be rescued by joe public.
Where's joe publics parade anyway? lol
The majority of the little ships were crewed by RN, Merchant Navy, fishermen or other professional sailors. Very few set sail manned by their owners; many were taken without their owners' permission or even knowing.

I sort of got a hankering it was going to be a ste film when the opening scene showed a soldier in a brand new uniform running down the streets.
I agree, that scene was so hollow!

I was a bit confused as to who exactly was shooting at them. The Germans, who were nowhere to be seen, or the French at the sand bag road block...?

The French were manning the road block to allow everyone else time to escape, they were the unlucky ones being sacrificed for the greater good. Honestly not sure how people could see that any other way? confused

my first job was making the Optica aircraft used in the film!
That's a blast from the past...used to enjoy seeing them flying around Salisbury way. They seemed futuristic.

It's a fixed reticule in the film anyhow, and when he fires the target is dead centre. If you're in a tight turn the target will often be below your nosecone, not even visible. When playing IL2 I used to turn inside, then roll so I could judge the lead angle.

Often wondered why they didn't have a mechanism to angle the guns upwards, rather than just moving the reticule down out of sight.
Weight, complexity, reliable ammunition feed. Keeping the guns working from a fixed position was tricky enough in the first place.

I was telling my mates wife about the film and being blonde with big tits (mates wife, not me), she knew nothing about the background story and only knows of Dunkirk as a ferry port.
I'd suggest your mate didn't marry her for her intellect then?
The amazing thing is that she's a senior chemist for a major pharmaceutical company. She's one of those people who is very intelligent but doesn't bother with everyday stuff. I think she was the one who thought New South Wales was a development area around Cardiff.

I think he books the holidays.

FLOL. That said it's a shame massive events are being forgotten about by the 'mainstream' I mean it's hardly Scapa flow but come on.

Didn't enjoy film, fortunately I didn't read this thread first or I would have hated it. I mean I spotted the Weymouth tower it was hardly subtle, a total clanger In a big budget film, I personally noted the train Interior butrim I'm a train geek and a driver of them also, that bit didn't detract from the film. The issue this film has is, it's boring.

Plus not much scale or grandeur or how bloody hard it was.

That’s the reality of military operations: long periods of boredom.

Thought the film was good and showed the desperation to get off the beach, the dangers at sea and how everyone chipped in to get everyone home.

Oh yes it has.

Seriously though, different people will have differing opinions.

I can see both sides.

For me, there was much which grated but overall, I enjoyed the film.

I'll qualify that by saying I also enjoyed Titanic.

Which suggested that the Wermacht were one street away from the beach promenade. So the whole premise of the film fell on it's arse in the opening scene.

There were hundreds of Naval vessels of all kinds at Dunkirk, we saw how many in the film. (And then it was a French ship)
Soldiers, 300,000 + how many did we see, let alone the French.
Air farce were there, we saw a couple of Spitfires, although at that early age of the war hurricanes were far more plentiful, (especially with an engine). German air farce by the hundred, german soldiers..............

So you are so wrong. It didnt

My impression was that it was from the start of the evacuation where soldiers started turning up at the beach, the boats were only setting sail to pick them up and a handful of RAF were sent to overwatch. Towards the end of the film is where the large scale evacuation occurred but it’s not seen and then shows the Matelot officer leaving last having done his job. Maybe they should have done an 80s style montage?

I do agree with the point about who was shooting at the start. As a film about what was in essence a logistical task I think they did an ok job.

Just watched this ,and shamefully I have to say I have very poor knowledge of the actual historical event,so I viewed the film purely from the perspective of entertainment .
I thought it was crap .

Me too, but I thought it was ok.

The glaring omission for me was about 295,000 soldiers trying to get home. The beach was empty!?
