I thought that as well, but the one they went to that museum in Cardiff to compare it to (the one where it wasn't clear whether it was much smaller, or the same size but further away) wasn't much better.I did wonder when they brought out that school photo showing John Jamieson whether the camera would scroll across loads of normal-looking boys to one that had a face the same shape as the one in the painting.
Probably made life easier that there wasn't some random person/organisation that has set itself up as the sole authority on his work, and where all the provonance in the world doesn't matter if they say 'non'. Then maybe burn it to seal the deal.
