To my mind, the bigger question is why this and still no production of any of the Laidlaw books by William McIlvanney which kicked off the Tartan Noir genre.

This Rebus is adequate but there is a rich seam of Scottish crime that is completely unmined.
absolutely agree on both fronts.
TV people are very simple, only one detective can come from each place and Glasgow already has Taggart. There would have to be some boxticking to get it through, like giving him a hobby like playing the accordion or a sidekick with an artificial leg or a small yappy handbag dog.
I suppose it's pure coincidence that Taggart and Laidlaw are (or were) weel-kent Glasgow car dealers.

I don’t don’t really get why

rebus was happy to arrange the pick up at Oxford bar. Did he just change his mind about the killing later I. If so that moment of indecision was not portrayed very clearly.

If it was the man all along to disarm his brother. Seems like an awfully risky plan especially as the brother wouldn’t have known where to find him otherwise.

Another cliché-fest (the major one being close relative of cop as serious criminal or victim of serious crime), some of which I don't expect to see until the writers run out of ideas in series 3.

And can we really believe that this Rebus would exist in the 2024 version of "Police Scotland"? I know, "it's not a documentary", but a little nod to reality would be welcome. smile

Maybe that's why 'The Complaints' are all over him?

Once I realised the show that I recognised the actor playing Caffety from was in fact 'Gary, Tank Commander' I couldn't take him seriously as a gangster.

Having now watched all 6 episodes, I am a bit disappointed in the quality of Rebus' detecting, he didn't actually work anything out other than it being his brother robbing the flat at the start, Shiv did everything else. biggrin

Rebus brother was also Nosmo King in Still Game (and also the ‘carpet guy’ in a different Still Game episode).

I doubt anyone in this reboot will win an award for their acting skills. Poor all round.

Also, casting a guy of Moroccan descent to play someone called ‘Daryl’ doesn’t sit quite right.

Appreciate that making comments about people’s appearance isn’t great, but Rebus boss - Jill - just constantly reminded me of Squidward.

[Gary] He's no Gary though, he's Sgt Thomson, eh?{/Gary] Tell me you didn't read that in the accent biggrin

I also recognised him from Still Game. Got to give the Scottish actors any work going. Speaking of which, Rhona played by Amy Manson, she's a new face for me, and also from Aberdeenshire. I look forward to seeing her again.

Ah, yea, Ger Cafferty was the caretaker at the People’s Palace in Still Game where Winston’s wedding took place.

We enjoyed the new series, binging it over two evenings. Yes there's a disconnect from reality, but most of these dramas require a suspension of disbelief these days.

This series got better and I enjoyed it. Not an all time great but still and enjoyable watch. Mixed in with watching Granite Harbour both seasons and Responder season 2 as I don’t like watching more than one episode of a series on the same night!!

Three episodes in and enjoying it. The storyline of Rebus's brother would have made a compelling storyline on its own.

As an aside, I've never heard so much use of the 'c' word in a BBC drama.

Probably because the BBC didn't make it. It was made by ViaPlay and bought by the BBC after ViaPlay decided to exit the UK.

Finished this today, really enjoyed it. I'm glad they didn't 'civilise' Edinburgh or the main characters accents. It was a really good depiction of the Edinburgh I got to know and like rather than the shortbread tin one I cannot abide!

Agree but have to disagree a little bit. Edinburgh was mostly bikes. The schemes were in Fife.

The Fife scenes were filmed in Rutherglen.

Not sure where Rebus's wife's house is.

Binge watched the last three episodes. Lots of nice loose ends to set up for another series.

TBH, any shot involving some post war Scottish Corporation housing could have been filmed anywhere in the central belt. I have no idea where the ex Mrs. Rebus's house is either.

As for Rebus's gaff, in the books it's in Arden St. in Marchmont. I know that quite well, as my daughter lived round the corner for four years when she was at Uni. I have no idea where they actually shot the doorstep scenes though.
