James Bond: Spectre
Discussion
Went to see it at the weekend and my negative take is similar to posters above.
Terrible theme song, Monica Belluci and Christoph Waltz underused - the latter's final scene was poor and his makeup looked like a kid's Halloween attempt at a scar, car chase ridiculously unbelievable, felt like a serious of short action sets cobbled together into a movie.

Whilst not a direct criticism of you, I do wonder what sort of film some people on this thread were expecting to see. It's a Bond film. 'Ridiculously unbelievable' and 'a series of action sets' is kind of par for the course.
Goldfinger, widely considered as one of the best (if not the best) Bond films centred around a plot where the bad guy gassed thousands of troops using stunt planes then broke into Fort Knox to contaminate their gold with a nuclear weapon.
Like I say, ridiculousness is par for the course
So, finally got around to watching this and really enjoyed it - by no means perfect but a solid 8 out of 10.
I can only assume, and it isn't a criticism, that those that didn't enjoy the movie had preconceived expectations of the movie.
I had no expectations, had a vague idea of what was going to be what and avoided this thread and any reviews until I had seen it.
Personally, would love to see Craig & Mendes back for one more.

It seems to be really splitting opinion, in my office 6 of us have seen it, absolute 50/50 split in those that liked it and those that thought it a bit mehI can only assume, and it isn't a criticism, that those that didn't enjoy the movie had preconceived expectations of the movie.

It looked real, and therefore good though.Goldfinger, widely considered as one of the best (if not the best) Bond films centred around a plot where the bad guy gassed thousands of troops using stunt planes then broke into Fort Knox to contaminate their gold with a nuclear weapon.
The car chase in Spectre was like a game of Mario Kart.

It wasn't the suspension of disbelief that I had trouble with, more the pacing and plot. It was like a live gig: three or four fast songs at the start to get the crowd jumping, then the new songs that no-one knows, then the old reliable ballads before a fast-paced finish to leave 'em wanting more. It's a Bond film. 'Ridiculously unbelievable' and 'a series of action sets' is kind of par for the course.

I thought the middle of the film, which could have given some depth to Bond's back-story, dragged before the editors realised how little run time they had left and cranked everything up for the big finish! I definitely think I need to watch it again though.

...Bond films centred around a plot...
A plot. One of them would have been nice I jest but it was wafer thin, I'm struggling to recall enough of it to make further comment. ...Bond films centred around a plot...
It's nothing out of the norm though - as long as a movie has big name actors, is beautifully shot in nice locations with lovely clothes and cars in shot, it seems it's enough for the vast majority of cinemagoers? Maybe I'm just getting old....
Re the car chase, as car fans I think we are all probably more critical of chase scenes in any movie (see Fast & Furious for 32 speed gearboxes and changing down a gear to gain rocket acceleration) - low slung supercars gliding down stone stairs, driving up banked walls, drifting everywhere - Mario Kart as someone said summed it up very well.

People do YouTube videos about the ridiculousness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmoIDKqfY44
On the positive side it did seem to hold my attention for two and a half hours as I felt short changed at the end thinking it was only half that time.
On the other hand where were the one liners? When he slid down the roof and landed on the sofa there was a pause for "Thank God for MFI" or "I always prefer open plan"
With the baddie scene in the train and the rope, out he goes in Bond style but silence followed, I was expecting
"Well he was a barrel of laughs!"
Continuity,
We were robbed of any more of Monica after a very short time and Bond says to her that Felix will look after you in America. Wasn't Felix eaten by sharks in the previous film?
Bond goes into the hotel room in an early scene with the dark haired girl, opens the door but does not close it. Next shot the door has mysteriously closed itself.
Millions of pounds spent with people looking at every frame in detail knowing there are geeks like me around and still they miss it.
The car chase is such a cliche. One second the baddie is right in the rear view mirror or right up to the bumper the next he is half a mile behind, same old tat with nothing original.
What is the memorable one liner or memorable scene from the film?
The main problem is that Craig as Bond is never a credible naval officer (as scripted by Fleming), more like a bricklayer and I suppose appeals to women who fantasise for a bit of rough.

Casion Royale rebooted the franchise. Everything previous was ditched. Then they went down the route of giving nods to previous films with the last few films. We were robbed of any more of Monica after a very short time and Bond says to her that Felix will look after you in America. It's all a bit screwed up like a bad Dr Who episode.

He lost a leg to a shark in Licence to Kill, but that was pre-reboot. He wasn't in Skyfall. We were robbed of any more of Monica after a very short time and Bond says to her that Felix will look after you in America. Wasn't Felix eaten by sharks in the previous film?
