We've always got dancing on Ice starting in a couple of weeks for an "entertainment" fix. wink

Good on Bill. Yes HRVY & Maisie probably had better performances, but given what's gone on this year i think the public vote reflected the entertainment value and he deserved the win.
I agree. yes

I think that makes Oti the first pro to win back to back series on the UK version.
Given that they always hobble the winner of the previous year with a lame duck (sorry, someone not favourite to win) to prevent such a thing, it's even more of an achievement. smile
We were watching on catch-up because we had dinner midway but all I can say is yes Maisie was the best dancer, Hrvy gained extra respect because as is often said it's difficult to lead the dance, as the male dancer. And, Bill was my favourite because I think he was paired with Otti as the joker in the pack and actually in that respect he was because the joke was on the producer. hehe

Never watched Strictly before, though my wife has been a big fan. Bill had me converted, he was just so great to watch. Turned me from someone who thought it was a crap dancing show to someone who actually voted for Bill to win. Huge well done to Bill, and of course Oti too.

Bill was bought in as a filler and no hoper, and the public took him to their hearts
This has left producers with egg on their faces.
I wonder how much of the emotions shown by the judges was genuine ,all I hope .
Well done Bill

Bill was brought as a more mature contestant, who historically have not done well on SCD.
The producers might not have expected him to be much of a contender, but I don't see why they have "egg on their faces". They're unlikely to care which celeb wins. They get the interviews/journey/publicity whoever holds up the trophy.

Thought Masie the best dancer, Bill the most infectious, Hrvy my own favourite because I warmed to him after thinking he’d be an annoying gobby twerp at the launch and Jamie the most enthusiastic so for me any of them could have won. Pleased for Bill in the end though and rather sad that that’s it.
+2 in this house, saved me some typing biggrin

He’s a very talented musician and performer. They can’t have been surprised that he had rhythm and a bit of pizzazz.

Well, quite.

It was always clear that he wasn't going to be a John Sergeant or Ann Widdecombe. Or even a Jeremy Vine.

Precisely because he was not expected to do well is why I stand by what I said .He split the top seeded contestants ,was never scored highly by the judges , always about middling. But public acclaim won through.
When picking contestants I believe the producers have in their minds where they would like the competition to go. I don’t believe it went the way they were expecting .Another person who I believe rose above expectations was Caroline Quentin , she might not have been young svelte and good looking , but she had elegance,
Don’t get me wrong though , I have little knowledge of the finer detail of technique , but still enjoyed the whole competition .

my take on it all, its a dancing show but the winners dont have to be a good dancer, otherwise they would not put it to the public vote --- we are included because we want to be entertained and if thats not a professional dancer hitting all the marks , then fine. i voted for the person i liked the most and entertained me the most and IMHO had a little "something" in his dances and character he brought.

if they want to create a Strictly "the professionals" where the judges count for the final, then i probably would not bother to watch, bit like Masterchef....

The problem is if you are young, female & can really dance a bit you just know that you're looking at three months of incredibly hard work with no chance of winning. Maisie was by far the best but was never going to win, like the good female performers in the last three years. Lets hope the fee was worth it.

Read today the fees are fixed for the contestants.

They mostly get paid less than the dancers.

£25k flat rate. £40k for getting past round 4. £75k for reaching the final, and £100k for the winner.

Assume the live tours get additional wonga.

Dancers are all on £50k flat rate.

Shirley highest paid judge - double what Bruno gets, and Bruno is on more than Craig...

Apparently DwtS pays Bruno six times what he gets from SCD.

I don't see why you think the producers have an agenda on the "way they'd like the competition to go".
What difference does it make to them who wins it?

I suspect they basically have an "agenda" to have a spread of celebs who appeal to a wide range of demographics (old/young, male/female, singers/actors, etc) but beyond that it would seem pointlessly risky to try and steer the competition to a particular winner

There is more to it than just £.
It’s an institution, to be the face of weekend entertainment for a 1/3rd of the year.

Also right now it’s that gig or sadly nothing until C19/20/21/... ends.
