Just flicked onto Sky Atlantic and The Winds Of Winter is on. Great episode. That symphony when the sept is going up is just superb.
That's one of the best episodes of the lot.

We've been lent the boxed set, S1 EP1 last night.

All seemed a bit dodgy, misogynistic with unconvincing acting. Certainly not suckered in yet, does it get better?

Absolutely agree, I bought the season 6 soundtrack CD purely on this episode, GOT at it's very best.

A lot of the relationships between characters is evident in the first few episodes, but later in the series I had to watch some of the earlier ones again just to clarify who was related to who. Once you get settled and familiar with the characters it becomes really good.

Aye, that's fair comment.

I think that, on balance though, that overall it is worth sticking with.

I don't think anyone on the planet can be ignorant of the fact that the final season was universally considered to be a rushed disappointment, so I won't treat that a spoiler. I would say that despite this it is worth watching.

I may have to eat every chicken in here if anyone disagrees.

I’ve said it before, I enjoyed the last series.

I’m not quite sure what people wanted, or what they expected even. It had to go somewhere and it had to end somehow.

It’s a shame we didn’t get more answers to some of the questions from earlier in the show but overall I think they wrapped it up pretty well.

They should really get a wriggle on with the prequels though .

The pacing was ridiculous. People teleporting around the place, whilst other factions barely moved.

It was a Hollywood blockbuster series, where the prior ones were like symphonies. There was none of the multilayered "personal" stories interlinking and interacting in unexpected ways.

I think it's fairly well accepted that D&D had had their egos inflated massively, and didn't want to spend months in Ireland anymore - too many enticing opportunities to sign and get paid megabucks for in the sun. So they rushed everything through.

To me, the level of input from GRRM and the quality of the end result are directly proportional.

They do a reboot of everything else. This should be done properly in maybe 5 years time as it will look really dated and silly by then.

Yeah, early GoT is best GoT. In fact, I'd stop at the end of S6 and leave it there.

GoT in the first few seasons was simply brilliant.

The first four seasons were adaptions of the first three books. It was a good adaption but most of the quality was in those books.

For Season 5 and season 6 they still had two books left to adapt, but they were a sprawling mess so they cut out masses of material and invented some new stuff to fill the holes.

Then in Season 7 and 8 they started to run into the problem that they had run out of book material AND what could reasonably extrapolated from where the books left off. They were on their own and sadly despite being good show runners, and competent adapters, they were no GRRM. Not even close.

Great writing is not easy and we probably only have a handful of great writers every generation.
