Films I watched this week (NO SPOILERS) (Vol 3)
Discussion
Empire State on Film4. A very eighties film (not surprisingly, as that's when it was released) - a man tries to do a property deal involving redevelopment of London's Docklands area, but the potential buyer loses interest. The story line, such as it is, is a bit confusing - one guy is a boxer but loses a fight, another has come from Newcastle to find his mate who may or may not be dead, a journalist is looking for a story and might have found one. Some familiar faces. Interesting for the backdrops (and probably more so for anyone familiar with the area) but not so much for the story.

It's interesting as a bit of a historical snapshot of London but the 'acting' isn't exactly good. RizzoTheRat said:
Love Actually in concert
A screening of the film with a full orchestra doing the score. Pretty good but the music was a little too loud for the rest of the audio in a few places. Disappointed they didn't have the brass section scattered through the audience for the wedding scene, but loved that they even did the Universal and Studio Canal themes at the start
They're doing Pirates of Caribbean in December which has a brilliant score but sadly we'll be away.
They're also doing Home Alone which seems an odd choice to me, not really know for it's music is it?
We've seen Titanic (dear God that's a bad film, I never really notice acting in films but Kate Winslet is the only one doing a half decent job) and The Muppets Christmas Carol (perfect film) in concert at the Albert Hall but they're both known for the music too. I guess Home Alone has something in it worth getting an orchestra involved but I'm a bit stumped too!A screening of the film with a full orchestra doing the score. Highlander on Legend last night.
Curiously grainy, poor sound quality broadcast of this absolute classic, like they were playing it from VHS.
Doesn’t take away the fact that this is, and always will be, 10/10.
There can be only one…
There is only one. They never released any more. No siree.Curiously grainy, poor sound quality broadcast of this absolute classic, like they were playing it from VHS.

I think they are trying to remake it.
No thankyou.

I watched it a few years ago with my daughter after giving it the big up, found it cringeworthy, dated and embarrassing in places. Bit like me. Curiously grainy, poor sound quality broadcast of this absolute classic, like they were playing it from VHS.

The only thing I always remember about the sequel was this scene from which I thought was hilarious back then.

Watched Enders Game, amazing facial tattoo makeup on Ben Kingsley and the film had it's moments.
Battlestar Gallactica Blood and Chrome. Has to one of the best spin offs from the series.
Ender’s Game was a bit disappointing. Apparently it’s based on a book which I’ve not come across so I’ve no idea if it’s true to the source, and Harrison Ford was really phoning it in.Battlestar Gallactica Blood and Chrome. Has to one of the best spin offs from the series.

Apparently the book (and author) have a lot of LGBTQ issues that Harrison Ford and others very publicly distanced themselves from and condemned. However, the film did not have such issues. So there's one "not being true to the book" but in a good way.
I too found the film a little disappointing. It was ok, I guess.
Enders Game isn't a bad film, not great either but the book is one of those all time classics of the genre. The basic ideas and framework is there but It's a pretty bad representation of the book. There is a massive reveal in the book which was a huge surprise to me but they didn't really bother with that in the film which kind of made it lose its meaning and just turn it into a big space battle.
Ready PlayerOne and Blade Runner did a similar thing of course but became much more of thier own thing.
I love Highlander but it's not great cinema.

As for LGBTQ, watch the Belvedere Vodka ad with Daniel Craig and give your opinion on that subject.

Not seen the advert before, but that's delightfully camp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDQzqWvwvJY
Daniel Craig has already shown he is up for messing with stereotypes, given he came on stage in drag and then undressed back into guy mode. I forget what the event was now, but I am sure that ruffled quite a few more feathers than some Christopher Walken style dancing.
Good on him, I say.
