I caught the recent Dad's Army the other day.

Terrible. Whoever wrote it lost the plot completely, we should never see or hear Mrs Mainwaring. I liked seeing the original vicar but they missed the opportunity for the other original Ian Lavender as the Brigadier to say to Captain Mainwaring "you stupid man".

Boring, wrong idea to set it in 1944, it was all originally about defending Britain from a German invasion and should have been kept to that.

IMDB ratings.
2016 Dad's Army film - 5.2/10
1971 Dads's Army film - 6.9/10

My rating
2016 Dad's Army - 3/10

You can't beat the original.
Neither of the film versions have been much cop.. Although at least the first did have most of the original cast..

The original TV series was the epitome of a quality sitcom and great cast, with some touching scenes. It hit the mark and stuck a chord with many who could still relate to the events/times..

1971 film 5/10
2016 film 2/10 almost un-watchable for purists...

Atomic Blonde: not sure what to think in all honesty. I did enjoy it but.... it all seemed a little 'empty' (for want of a better phrase). The soundtrack was brilliant (IMO) and possibly worth it for that alone, some truly brutal set-pieces but all in all I preferred John Wick 1
If John Wick 1 was better then I will give it a wide birth, no an even wider birth as John Wick was unwatchable imho.

Thank fk it's not just me. I do wonder sometimes. Unwatchable is absolutely the right word, intensely unenjoyable.

Seen it.

It's down to:

The Emoji Movie - hmm

Captain Underpants - too old for a 3yrd old?

Nut Job 2 - ?
They made a Nut Job 2? Christ, the first was bad enough.
Yet to see the other two with my kids.

So, we went to see The Emoji movie and it wasn't as terrible as perhaps expected.

My 3yr old tolerated it and it's the first time she stayed for a full movie - she didn't for DM3 or Cars 3.

My 12yr old actually liked it as it was relevant to a 12yr olds world.

Me - it went quickly and was alright.

Obviously not good but not as bad as the reviews would leave you to be.

Seen worse and something like B vs S DOJ and Ghostbusters made me angry as they were masquerading as films with genuine intent whereas this knows it's light on but plays to its market as expected.

Atomic Blonde

Maybe it is just my age but I fking loved it! bounce

The hair (not unlike my own biggrin), the clothes, I am a late 80s/early 90s ex goth hehe, the music music (disappointed they didn't use the original version of Stigmata though frown), the cars cloud9 and a woman competently and reasonably realistically kicking the st out of people who deserved it (without superpowers) and looking pretty well beaten up herself.

A bloody entertaining J Wick/J Bourne thumbup

We just came back from watching this, I liked it. Although it wasn't what I was expecting (which was a nice surprise). I thought it would be more comic-book action, like John Wick, but it was quite a bit more dark and serious - and the music was ace!

Is that the original 1960s psychedelic version or the new one this week?

I thought the first 10 minutes were good (pretty much the trailer) but I found the middle 90 pretty boring, despite a good soundtrack and Ms Theron looking stunning in every scene. Fur coat no knickers was my verdict.

Guy Richie's King Arthur

This is easily the best film I've ever seen. I think 20/10 is too low a score. I'm going with 1000% despite knowing such a thing is impossible but that's what Richie has done with this film.

Casting David Beckham was genius too.

Yes, it was utterly s***e. Save yourself the bother. I have absolutely no clue what story he was trying to tell with this one. I'm simply amazed at the sheer number of respected actors he managed to coerce into playing along. They must owe him or he has photos of each of them having sex with a donkey or something. There can be no other reason. Well, except for Beckham who probably paid for the privilege (acting in the film, not the donkey thing - he is after all, by all accounts, a decent chap).

The Handmaiden - 10/10

Watched this evening and simply cannot pick a fault in it, so an easy 10/10. Unlike anything I've ever seen before, brilliantly structured, dark yet at times amusing, beautifully shot and will deserve repeat viewings as it's just so clever.

Best to watch with as little info as possible, I went in just knowing it was excellent but no real idea of plot etc.

In a year when I've been pleasantly surprised by a couple of films that have stepped away from traditional narratives (Baby Driver and Dunkirk) I wasn't expecting another that has possibly topped both.

For the god knows how many hundredth time today, Project X.

Not the most known film, but it's one of my favourites. Basically a film about three 17 year old lads who throw a house party, that goes off the scale out of control. A hilarious film, and a warning to anyone who has a 17 year old to never leave them home alone.

And one of the (IMO) funniest ever last lines in a film!

If you've not seen it it is worth a 99p on eBay all day long.

Alien Covenant, oh dear. I really didn't want to dislike it but I did.
3/10 because it looked lovely.

Get Out - tense and well made film, perhaps not the masterpiece that most critics lauded it as but still kept me interested throughout. Only thing I didn't like was his friend, whose comic relief seemed out of place 7/10

Ghost in the Shell (1995)
It's been many years since I watched the 1995 anime, and just as long since I read the manga (which I own, so I might revisit that too).

I'd forgotten how slow paced it is, and how much stilted earnest exposition there is. I don't think it has aged very well to be honest. frown
