Detectorists: BBC4
Discussion
For me it was very poor.
It ruined the end of the last series by taking away Andy and Lance’s gold and showing that Andy couldn’t build them a home.
The new story was weak and it wasn’t long enough to develop themes like a series so it all felt a bit rushed, it also felt like it had lost the innocence of the earlier series.
Also the scene with Simon and Garfunkel made no sense as to why they came and detected with no permission.
Unfortunately a 3 out of 10 detectors….. detectorists…. for me.

I partially agree with this, and didn't enjoy Simon and Garfunkel coming out on top. That said, Detectorists at its worst is still better than most programmes at their bestIt ruined the end of the last series by taking away Andy and Lance’s gold and showing that Andy couldn’t build them a home.

This will sound mean/critical - but the child playing the son, the delivery of his lines sounded very rehearsed/practiced & broke the immersion.

I also felt it was rushed - I was surprised when the end credits flashed up. I felt the series meandered off into the lives of the support characters, where the film length episode didn't really make any use of them. Maybe I need to watch it again.

Yes, that kid didn't seem to be the greatest acting talent. This will sound mean/critical - but the child playing the son, the delivery of his lines sounded very rehearsed/practiced & broke the immersion.
We really enjoyed the episode, but I also don't think it quite stood up to the best of the series format. Loved the (reverential tone) Alice Roberts bit.
Still, even if that's all there's ever going to be, I think Crook can be proud of what he's made.
Good episode, enjoyed it and glad they made it. Didn’t blow me away but thinking about it none of them have, it’s just really pleasant escapism viewing with a few clever and subtle long running jokes (Sheila’s lemonade, Simon & Garfunkel etc).
Maybe expectations were raised a bit too much now that Detectorists has become more mainstream, but in reality they’ve just given us more of the same which is what we all liked so much in the first place. Gentle comedy, nice scenery, likeable characters and so on.
Agree about the child actor, that’s one thing that the US seems to be able to get right but we struggle with for some reason. I’ve seen some fantastic natural performances from young US actors but UK ones often seem to have a universal stage school accent and a stilted delivery. Easy to criticise, not something I know much about but that’s my observation anyway.
All in all though a big thumbs up from me.

Agree with the criticism above - this special didn't live up the high standard of the other series.
Lance in particular was annoying - previously he was great as he didn't live up to his (stereotypical) appearance, more than held his own and had a great balance of vulnerability and assertion.
The Peters and Lee duo were all set up from last series with the big rapprochement, they were in the fold and the palpable excitement of the gazebo etc. was fab. Now they're villains again, but with money, and therefore boring / irrelevant.
Still an enjoyable watch, but sadly not of the same quality as before. The Sheila character in particular was superb - her sixth sense, her loss (although never explained) and her general mien, all good. Same for many of the characters. So much potential...

Having worked with a few Child actors over the years, there's a common saying that the really good ones you really don't want to work with. Not the best episode, but still enjoyable in the understated way it is made.
I can't be bothered to trawl back through the thread to see if it's in been posted before, but just came across this behind the scenes which some might enjoy...
and a link to filming locations, mainly Framlingham and Rendlesham Forest...

Fact of the day.... Andy and Becky's cottage (Tatterdown Cottage near Orford) was actually destroyed in a fire in 2021.
And unlike the previous series, the Scout Hut was fabricated for the show as the original one had been demolished.
Oh bugger. Interesting though. And unlike the previous series, the Scout Hut was fabricated for the show as the original one had been demolished.
Am I right in thinking the TR7 is actually owned by Mckenzie? - I thought it was looking extra sharp.
