Vesper.
The trailer looked good, but not much of it made any sense.

I've been ummming and ahhhhing for a while now as to whether I should watch this, as reviews are so polarising from amazing to boring. The trailer looked good, but not much of it made any sense.

I can't make my mind up if I should invest any time on it.
You didn't help with that one bit either

I watched it last night and recognise your review.
Still enjoyed it though, something a little different and the 2 hours passed quickly. As to the ending I thought it was spot on, what else can happen; shoot out, car chase, fireworks display?
Watched this last night as well, definitely a bit different, laughed at a lot and wtf’d at a lot. The wee donkey stole the show.Still enjoyed it though, something a little different and the 2 hours passed quickly. Set against the Civil War on the mainland. We all have common ground (the love for the innocent animals in this case - although maybe not you!) but sometimes we just decide we don’t like someone/their sexual preference/race/religion/country anymore. Fighting for the sake of fighting.
A cinema binge yesterday as the local Indie was doing reruns from the year for the bargain price of £4.00p.
I started off with Brian and Charles , a lightweight comedy about a lonely Welsh Farmer who decides to build a robot from found bits including a mannequin head and a washing machine., and later on, a cabbage gun. In offensive movie and quite enjoyable with a happy ending of course after the inevitable bit of will he / won't he, tension spot.
7 bonfires / 10 holiday postcards.
A 45 minute break for a quick sandwich meal deal followed by Elvis , a biopic of the great man with an emphasis on the manipulative Colonel Parker played by Tom Hanks. ( did he really put that much weight on to play the part ? For us old rockers going back to the Sun Studio days was a good trip, but the ending we all know was inevitable.
7 Pink Cadillacs / 10 Gracelands
On arriving home, I decided to try and find a delightful movie that I saw the tail end of on Talking Pictures, so after an admin delay, I finally managed to get into TPTVEncore - the repeat channel and I was delighted to find The Halfway House from 1944. If you fancy it, be quick, it disappears ( like the H/W House landlord ) after 25th December.
To me, it was until now an unknown Ealing movie about a group of people who arrive at a remote Welsh Inn - each with personal issues of love, death, emotion, marriage etc which if the could be resolved would lead to a happier life.
This is resolved by them discovering that they have been taken back in time by a full year giving them a second chance at life. The inn keeper with his daughter are always there to help, but when she fails to cast a shadow, the realisation kicks in. They are ghosts with no horror involved. mention of the war is almost incidental.
I loved it - it had all the sentimental touches of life that once was so simple, when people worked together and had respect and duty. Thoroughly recommended.
8 Whisky Bottles / 10 unconvincing Mediums.

Dune (1984)
Another David Lynch cult classic popped up on All4 which I haven't seen before.
Obviously hacked n slashed the book to fit in 2hrs. Very turgid and things move very quickly making it difficult to invest in the plot and empathizing with characters.
A very generous 7 sandworms out of 10. If it wasn't for the the production and world building it would be 4 out of 10.

Abandoned
Film 259 of the same story where a young family move from the city to a cheap big house in the sticks "with a gory past" for a better life.
The husband's always out the house working so mum and young baby must contend with the weird stuff going on.
Emma Roberts is the mother suffering with postpartum who starts imagining ghostly going on's in the house.
Micheal Shannon is the creepy neighbour that has lived there all his life and has all the answers but is reluctant to give a straight answer.
As a bloke, as I've never had to go through the baby blues, this film didn't seem so good, but a women that has been through it will probably relate more to this film and get what it's about.
Average 4.5/10

Maybe make your own mind up. I don’t suggest going if you didn’t like the 1st one though! “like being waterboarded with turquoise cement”

The Phantom of the Open.
Now i watched this purely because it had Sally Hawkins and Mark Rylance in it. I don't even like golf.
Great story (based on fact), great acting. Very poignant. Quietly funny.
8/10 par 5.

I saw the film dozens of times before I ever read the book, due to an age thing maybe ....... and also being a film fan, more than a book worm.Another David Lynch cult classic popped up on All4 which I haven't seen before.

Still love this film, especially the production and sets as mentioned.
I've not revisited since the Villeneuve version has come out, but I'm sure I'd still be a fan.
Patrick Stewart and Max von Siddow make it for me.

Having it all in a two hour film, I think it’s better than the current idea, watch part one if a film, wait three years for part two…. Wait another three years for part three….. sorry that doesn’t work at all for me. Another David Lynch cult classic popped up on All4 which I haven't seen before.

How did you feel.about Lord of the Rings? Do you feel that should have been shoehorned into one film too?The Villeneuve Dune film chose a natural point to pause the story, in my opinion
