Why do they do so much fabrication (battery boxes, inter alia) out of 3mm steel? Can't they do grp or something? It seems to me that they adding a huge amount of unnecessary weight.

Watched this earlier on catch up, did wonder about the gearbox and also what was the sense in driving all the way too Germany, have these places never heard of carriers.

Also working underneath a car only supported on a jack, madness

Plus we are expected to believe that Pedro drove the car the 75 odd miles back to Westfield

Did not know until watching this however that Westfield now own Chesil Motors, maybe they requested an uprated gearbox

I think this program is getting worse as it goes along
I've now watched the Chesil episode too. 780 odd miles to Hamburg in a production EV (not one of theirs with 100 miles range) and only 4 refuelling stops along the way. Not a great advert for EVs.

I also see that the 3 cars featured so far are still registered as having ICE's; the Chesil having a 2,000 cc motor, so probably a fair bit more than the 40 odd bhp claimed in the programme.

I see that heaters and vacuum assisted brakes are among their options. I wonder where the vacuum comes from?

The reason they gave was that the old gearbox was going back for exchange. I've never sent a gearbox by courier, nor charged an electric vehicle, perhaps it worked out a bit cheaper, and maybe the German VW supplier paid for a bit of advertising.

Just a bit of added TV 'drama' most probably the only reason......

I would guess that it comes from a vacuum pump powered from the 12v circuit. No different from diesels or petrol automatics that also need a pump due to the lack of inlet manifold vacuum.

At least it's watchable and they aren't yanks whoopin' and a hollerin'
:-)
It's interesting but I wish they could show the actual finished as fitted costs.

They did in other episodes but as this was a trade job for Westfield I'm sure they don't want prospective customers knowing how much extra they are charging

Cost, ease of access to the skills involved to fabricate a box.

I think a problem with electric cars, regardless of whether it's a new car or a change like these, is that weight is a four letter word and shouldn't be spoke about. The idea that you're shoving hundreds of kilos of weight in to something, why bother worrying about 10kg here or there?

The whole trip to Germany in the Electric Kia was a lesson in why you should buy a Diesel .

4 stops each way to charge the battery. Loads of range anxiety etc.

A Diesel Kia would have done the trip non stop on a single tank of fuel.

Except with the lower cost of diesel in Germany, you make sure you only got enough to get you there, and then fill it up over there for less money smile

I missed the show but Petrol Ped from YouTube is one of the presenters and he’s been rather excited about it hitting the screens.

He’s worth a watch for his car reviews if you still have time on your hands
What an earth is he for? Equally annoying on his youtube channel.

Lipstick red interior with the green is a ballsey choice.

Continuity guy should be shot for tonights episode, as it was all over the place, and they seem to focus on the boring stuff, and missing out the interesting bits......as usual.

Still failing to see the point though, but hey, each to their own.

Did they even finish the car in tonight's show? They spent so long going on about chrome trim that I lost interest and never saw the car drive under electric power.

Showed it finished, but not driving, so either the owner objected, or it wasn't really finished?

Ok, thanks. My attention went elsewhere when they started explaining how chrome plating and powder coating work, and I thought I was watching a repeat of Car SOS or Wheeler Dealers.

I wondered how their work can cost so much, but then I learned they spend six grand (!) on painting the BMW, and the interior retrim took A MONTH!

Plus, there must be about a hundred grand's worth of sheet steel in there. rolleyes At least drill some holes in the battery boxes to reduce weight, guys.
