Hmmm, I quite enjoyed this, maybe i got distracted by the curve-ball but easy a 7/10 for the action
Any body else ?
Yep. I was expecting a simple replaying of all the previous films called The Mummy but it was a bit different and all the better for it. Hmmm, I quite enjoyed this, maybe i got distracted by the curve-ball but easy a 7/10 for the action

Just rented The Villainess from Amazon Prime, a new Korean action movie that seemed to blend both O-Ren Ishii's back story from Kill Bill and the Bridget Fonda 1993 movie, Point of No Return.
If you like stuff like that, and The Raid movies, it's worth giving this a go, the action scenes and camera work are very good, and I fully expect a sanitised Hollywood version soon.
Thanks for the tip, sounds good, I'll keep an eye out for it.If you like stuff like that, and The Raid movies, it's worth giving this a go, the action scenes and camera work are very good, and I fully expect a sanitised Hollywood version soon.
meanwhile...The Big Short
Covers the financial crash / sub prime thing from 2007/2008 in a surprisingly entertaining way. Made me laugh and the end made me angry when it's announced that certain banks just waited a few years then started exactly the same scams all over again.
I probably need to watch it again to get some of the finer detail straight, but it is watchable without knowing anything about bonds or US banking system. 8/10 from me, 7/10 from the Mrs who fell asleep before the end (but wants to watch it again).

American Assassin
I suspect that this was written by a large committee who started with a whiteboard session where every 'action movie' cliche was written down, then ticked off as the story was written. Then it was re-written to remove any semblance of sense from the plot. Then some more explosions were added and a few more fight scenes thrown in just for good measure. Then, because it was still st, a 'disaster movie' style ending was tacked on and everyone went to the pub.
Avoid.
Don't know about the large writing committee, but this is from one of the late Vince Flynn's books of the same name.I suspect that this was written by a large committee who started with a whiteboard session where every 'action movie' cliche was written down, then ticked off as the story was written. The New IT film.
I probably just don't get modern horror films, it felt like some sort of rom com horror with gratuitous violence and set jump scares as well as some scenes i guess for Jimmy Saville. Got bored towards end just wanted it to finish. Nothing really like the original as a physiological thriller/horror.
5/10 Wait until it is out on 'video'
When I first saw it I wasn't that impressed. As a horror I didn't feel particularly scared at any point.... But being a 'limitless' member at Odeon (free entry) I went back to see it again, and it somehow improvedI probably just don't get modern horror films, it felt like some sort of rom com horror with gratuitous violence and set jump scares as well as some scenes i guess for Jimmy Saville. I think its as much a 'coming of age' movie as a horror, and if you can go with that its quite enjoyable 7/10

"Detroit ", well, that was a journey!
Where do I start. Far, far too long, disjointed and the centre section in the hotel went on for far, far, far, far, too long, by faaaaaaaaarrr.
Correct, not an enjoyable experience.
I know it was based on a true story but I would rather watch a documentary about it any day, talk about overdramatised!
5/10 and I'm being faaaaarr to generous.
Need some proper entertainment, think I'll watch "No Country For Old Men " on Friday.
Powerful story, well acted, but way too long by at least 45 minutes,,,, Spoilt it for me - I just kept wishing it would all be over, which was a shame..Where do I start. Far, far too long, disjointed and the centre section in the hotel went on for far, far, far, far, too long, by faaaaaaaaarrr.

I agree some films I watched at the cinema then watched again later have improved. I just found the film really dragged on.I think its as much a 'coming of age' movie as a horror, and if you can go with that its quite enjoyable 7/10

My best friend is staying with me this weekend so we watched a few films together.
Dark City
I repaid the favour by putting this on as I had seen it once before and she had never seen it, and I figured it had a similar WTF vibe. She enjoyed it.
Now that's a film I haven't seen in years. I remember at the time feeling it was almost Proto-Matrix in the way the protagonist is taken on an unwilling journey to figure out why his world is so messed up.Dark City

Didn't really get it as a film.
Carrot / potato
Pretty much what I thought. I love music, car chases, heist movies and action but this movie left me cold. Drive covers these bases better. There wasn't as much in the way of car chase action after the opening scene as I expected. I was hoping for a lot more from the characters and story but it just didn't work for me. Didn't really get it as a film.
Carrot / potato
4, maybe 5 / 10

Somewhere Else Tomorrow.
A small budget movie about some Germans traversing the globe on BMW bikes. Very interesting, far, far away from the over-supported unrealistic commercialism of 'Long way round'
If you are into overland trips, you'll enjoy this. 8/10
Sounds promising. Speaking as a half German and a motorcyclist I am surprised I haven't seen this!A small budget movie about some Germans traversing the globe on BMW bikes. Very interesting, far, far away from the over-supported unrealistic commercialism of 'Long way round'

This is definitely going on my list, thank you.
American Assassin
Was really liking this, as the main lead character wasn't one of the usual recognisable faces for me.
Then at the end it went mental!
It just lacked a few God bless America moments to push it over the edge.
Overall regardless of the stupid ending i enjoyed it, so 8/10
Bonus points for casting Shiva Negar
Not spotted her before, but shes a stunner

I'll have to look out for that. Try Mondo Enduro if you've not seen it for a similarly low budget British trip. Austin Vince from that lot, and his wife Lois Pryce, run an adventure travel film festival which I really need to get ton one of these daysA small budget movie about some Germans traversing the globe on BMW bikes.
