Agreed, I spunked £1k on a new saddle and another £1k on new wheels yesterday just for my backup bike and my DH rig will be getting a full £4k overhaul of gears, shifters etc ready for winter.
£5k is literally peanuts, most of the poor people I drive past in my Fezza on the way to work are commuting to their PAYE jobs on bikes that cost that much.

I have no idea what a £1k saddle could possibly do, but I'm intrigued. What is it?£5k is literally peanuts, most of the poor people I drive past in my Fezza on the way to work are commuting to their PAYE jobs on bikes that cost that much.

i think prices have gone up because people will pay it, nothing to do with value or cost, just milking
Dunno. Nearly all are made in Taiwan and certainly many of the components are, even if the frame itself isn't. Cost of shipping from the far East has blown out.Plus there are delays, creating shortages, which in and of themself create inflation.

That's actually pretty cheap, I heard in the tyre industry someone paying over $20,000 for a container from China to the UK and rumours of $30,000 before this is over.Plus there are delays, creating shortages, which in and of themself create inflation.
It used to be around $1500.
This is why chinese tyres are getting expensive, especially UHP as you can't fit as many in.

and theres the thing, prices don't "have" to go up when theres a shortage, they go up because they know people will pay it. Hence milkingSee container prices - they go up because when supply is short, some people bid more, up to a point.
The alternative is Ukranian tractor factory planning.
The price of 'push bikes' never ceases to amaze me as an owner of motorbikes as the sheer complexity and amount of parts on a motorbike compared to a bicycle (even a high spec' one) doesn't seem to validate the relatively high price of bicycles.
The most I've ever spent on a motorbike was just over £6k for my KTM and that has magnesium wheels, high end suspension and brakes, a 990cc engine and also a fair bit of carbon and anodised parts the previous owner added. Yes it was 4 years old when I bought it but there is so much there that even at a bit more than double that new in comparison to a top end bicycle I just don't get it. There is a high end bicycle shop a couple of roads from me with bikes over £10k and again compare that to a car you could buy for the same money.
I'm all for people ploughing money into their passion if they want to and can afford it but for a pedal powered (non-assisted) bike I can't see how spending £10k on a bike rather than say £2k on bike gives anything like £8k's worth of additional benefits (yes better materials make lighter etc but unless you are competing surely the human riding it has more to do with the pace they can maintain).
Sorry for the thread drift continuation.

Ive been an avid cyclist for decades both on and off road. We use to have a saying " five grand bike, 50 p legs" however that went out of the window 10 years ago.
Lining up on the start for a road race (cycling) nowadays there are kids (18 YO) with £ 10 K bikes ahoy, defo must have a well paid paper rounds.
Even n0bbers riding these wheels in races which cannot be repaired if you crash and burn!! Ridiculous

Same level of validation demanding "LOOK AT ME PLEBS I HAVE A SHINY NEW TOY" as any influencer though. markiii said:
what i never understand is for the average cyclist they are cycling for fitness. Surely more weight is better for you?
Only if you can loose that weight for a race/event.It's like if you run wearing a weighted vest then race day remove it you'll fly because the same energy is going to push you forwards far easier than you've trained .
