The Machinist is free on Prime if you've missed it. Christian Bale is an insomniac questioning his sanity, as do you as the story unfolds. 8/10.
Very dark film, well worth a watch. Christian Bale is such a great actor, pretty extreme how he lost weight for this film.
My favourite actor. He's brilliant in everything, not least The Machinist. Super film.
Yeah, just watched this the other day and enjoyed it. A puzzler that has a Memento feel about it. Literally dark - visually, with not much colour. You could kind of guess the result from one part of the film at the funfair, but otherwise it is one that probably benefits from a second viewing!
Now that was a helluva film - haven't seen it before and couldn't resist after the comments on here! 8.5/10. Dark and keeps you guessing well, right from the off!

Dredd (2012)

Watched again last night, an enjoyable way to spend 2 and half hours.
Indefinitely better than Stallone's version.

Knives Out (2019)

Daniel Craig adopts the most ridiculous American accent and, in an attempt to be Columbo, delivers >insert dreadful ITV detective drama of choice<.

Over two hours long, it drags itself along failing, at every turn. to create any tension whatsoever.

No idea how IMDB sees it at as a 7.9; I'd say 5.9 is far closer to the reality.

I remember that as being one of the best comic adaptations ever made. The tower block finale even seemed to be framed like a comic book page. Will have to rewatch, it blew me away all those years ago. I am a Dredd fan, but not a comic book geek, and the Stallone version was an insult. Watchable had it not been Dredd...but it was, so not for me.

Yes Dredd is very good.

Another Christian Bale film today, The Prestige is free on Prime. Set in the late 19th century, the rivalry between two magicians escalates into obsession and murder. It's very well told and keeps you guessing to the end. 8/10

I think you still rate it too highly. wink

Moonraker (1979)

Utterly splendid. So many cliches, possibly the Zenith of the Moore era, incl Lois Maxwell. 7/10.

Shirley (2020)

Elizabeth Moss finally escaped the Handmaid’s Tale and proves she has range, odd film but watchable. 7/10.

I'm not convinced there was a big delta between his zenith and his nadir.

The Gentleman, I'd not heard of it until someone on here mentioned it some time back. Reminded me a lot of Layer Cake as well as Guy Richies other films. Hugh Grant was great in an OTT way, and i really liked the way the story is told as him telling the story. Well worth a watch.

Finally watched Rogue One - possibly one of the best films in the franchise? Exciting, fun, and touching.

My biggest problem with that film is that it played out like the parlour game "Fortunately... Unfortunately..."

Unfortunately, bad thing happens and it looks dire... but Fortunately something saves the day... but Unfortunately there is a setback... but Fortunately something rescues it in the nick of time... but Unfortunately... etc etc, alternating in every increasing magnitude, with victory snatched from the jaws of defeat followed by defeat being snatched from the jaws of victory, until I was shouting "Hurry up and blow this thing so we can all go home".

I enjoyed it. Best og the franchise but it is a very low bar.

Artemis Fowl - A proper mess.
I know nothing about the books but this felt really laboured. The lead boy was a bit rubbish, the plot a confused mess and nothing really gelled very well. Felt like it had been radically cut down and missed loads of important stuff out. And if they mention that the McGuffin is the most important powerful magical item one more time I was going to scream. Clumsy. The end dragged out for ages as well.
Felt like the pilot of a TV series.
5/10 for the special effects.

That CGI face of Tarkin really spoiled it for me - horrible.

edit: forgot about the cgi face of Leia too - ugh, something wrong with the eyes - soulless frown

Driving Miss Daisy

Sublime brilliance, with truly outstanding performances from Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. Timeless.
Rewatched this last night after 30 years. Best film we’ve watched for a long time. Absolutely excellent. Beautiful dated sets with the most amazing period cars.

Thanks for the heads up. smile

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

Science being conducted in small laboratory leads to race war and global pandemic.

Good stuff, but the CG apes look a bit dodgy in quite a few shots.
