Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - 9/10

Wonderful understated film with a couple of fantastic performances (Rockwell and McDormand in particular). Dark but funny and nice to see an ending that absolutely hasn't been Hollywoodised.
Screen Unseen lastnight?

It was really good. Didn't know anything about it, and I avoided the chatter about the clues on Facebook/Twitter leading up to it.

One of my favourites of the year smile
Talking of In Bruges. I didn't realise until reading up afterwards that In Bruges, 3 Billboards... (and Seven Psychopaths) are all written and directed by Martin McDonagh.

In Bruges tonight.
My favourite film i think.
10/10
It is indeed. Look out for the "alcoves" smile
Yup, just watched this based on the positive reviews here. It's definitely one to watch, a superb film...

I also want to go to Bruges now.
I love that movie. I watched it with my other half and we decided to visit on the back of the film. We went in 2012 and watched it again the night before we went. had a brilliant time and also picked out a few places from the film which made it more memorable.

Split - James McAvoy plays the role superb in what’s a pretty good movie I thought.

Same here , we visited a couple of years back and my son and I spent the whole break quoting the movie much to my wifes annoyance

Wonderful place, great bars and restaurants but why did the movie not mention the chocolate cocks ?

Don't want to give anything away so I've spoilered my thoughts but I give it about 3/10.

I was onboard until the wall climbing bit then I decided it was a pile of st. Mental issues are fine, being an actual monster was too much.

Makes more sense when you consider that it's meant to be a companion film to Unbreakable and that Unbreakable 2 will be linked to it as well as the original.

Haven't watched it yet but with the context I'm really tempted.

Interesting comments and differing opinions regarding John Wick.

I watched it and was prepared to be horrified. To my surprise it was fantasically enjoyable if totally ridiculous - but the second was nowhere near as good. At least John Wick didn't have that gurning tt Gerard Butler in it, whose flobby fat chops I imagine behave like this whenever he shakes his fat soft head...

Actually, in Keanu's defence, he was damned good in The Gift.
If you take your brain out and suspend belief John Wick is an awesome film. It's a rollercoaster ride of violence and all the better for being unbelievable.

I'd go mental too if someone did that to my dog smile

I also enjoyed JW2.

Yes, nice to see a film without knowing anything, I've since watched the red band trailer and it really spoils nearly all of the lighter moments.

Certainly top 5 for me. Heard numerous complaints about the ending but I found it very refreshing.

John Wick

Terrible, terrible film.

Watched it on netflix and suckered in as was convinced it had to get better. I was wrong.

Essentially someone kills Keanu Reeves dog and nicks his car. As a retired hitman he then goes on a revenge fuelled rampage killing everyone remotely involved.

I'm guessing he needed the money
GET OUT!

John Wick is hardly "high art" but you could see how much time training he had put in for the fighting and weapon handling

Its up there with any martial art movie imo
Agreed but compare that to "Taken" and there is no comparison.

"Taken", good storyline, plausible, (huge tongue in cheek) highly entertaining.

"Wick", way down the ladder in all respects apart from the killing choreography.

'nuff said from me, I need to work!
John Wick has cooler cars, much better costume, far more varied and entertaining bad guys, MUCH better music.

It does exactly what it says on the tin and doesn't try to pretend to be anything other than a stylish beatmeup.

It is not high art, it's entertainment. Take your head out of your ass and enjoy it as such. Or sit there tutting, up to you.

The thing that I liked about John Wick was that he actually reloaded his gun, and shot a feasible number bullets between each reload. nerd

(Otherwise, it was a fairly boring film I have to say. Sorry)

That’s a bit harsh. As the city it is far better than most.

We stopped off there for the day on the way back from a ring trip and thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone’s different.

Ah, that London response.

Let me guess, you are young, English and probably a scaffolder.

Jon Wick is an interesting one, yes it's plot is paper thin and Keanu has a very limited range, his flip from deadpan to shouty\angry is probably about the best you can hope for. However what Keannu does VERY well is physical action, he looks incredibly convincing and good when kicking 50 shades of crap out of people, something that is actually VERY hard to do. If you don't believe me, just try some Kung Fu moves in front of the mirror and see how good you look, even most proper martial artists don't look that convincing.

Those looking for character nuance or Oscar worthy performances are watching the wrong film\actor I'm afraid, Keanu's films usually follow a very simple character arc, in this one it's a simple revenge tail which he does really well as it essentially boils down to him getting angry and kicking people. As Russell Crowe once famously said after cutting his way through half a dozen people in Gladiator, "Are you not entertained?, I certainly was.
I think that sums it up pretty well. It's basically a collection of very well choreographed fight scenes.

I quite enjoyed John Wick and I'm not usually a big fan of out and out fighty films.
This was daft but fun, stuck to its own internal logic and the fights looked good.
It's not a cinematic masterpiece with a nuanced plot but it entertained.

Berlin Syndrome (2017)

Lone Aussie tourist wakes up in a locked East Berlin apartment after partying with a German chap. Investigating further confirms that she's in a bit of a pickle.

Thought this was pretty good; lead actors especially. Maybe a tad too horror in places but generally well worth watching. Plus added bonus of crumbling commie buildings & The Fernsehturm in the background & a very clean Audi 100.
