Finally watched Rogue One - possibly one of the best films in the franchise? Exciting, fun, and touching.
My biggest problem with that film is that it played out like the parlour game "Fortunately... Unfortunately..." Unfortunately, bad thing happens and it looks dire... but Fortunately something saves the day... but Unfortunately there is a setback... but Fortunately something rescues it in the nick of time... but Unfortunately... etc etc, alternating in every increasing magnitude, with victory snatched from the jaws of defeat followed by defeat being snatched from the jaws of victory, until I was shouting "Hurry up and blow this thing so we can all go home".

Right we need to get this thing to get this thing to find this thing
Or what a stroke of luck I found this thing and what a stroke of luck I’ve now found this thing oh what a stork of luck I’ve found the millennium falcon oh what a stroke of luck I’ve found Han Solo oh what a stork of luck all these monsters eat all the bad guys. Oh what a stroke of luck I’m in a place where Luke’s light sabre is. Etc etc etc oh what a stroke of luck the earth splits just in time and I’m on the right side to get to the falcon. And fking on and on
Struggling for something to watch last night - even as someone who sees films only when they appear on the TV, I couldn't find anything new other than Rogue One, and I missed the start - I watched my recording of Jurassic Park Fallen Kingdom last night. Wasn't bad, though once you've seen one dinosaur fight you've seen them all. Interesting mix of strong glass and weak glass in that conservatory roof, no wonder the dino wasn't sure where to step.

it felt a bit like a rehash of the first and second JP films; the set pieces seemed like direct replacements.Doofus said:

Erm, when you say 'the very over rated older stuff' are you talking about the films made in 70s and 80s? really?? The original films that literally blew everything away and set the standard for decades.
Yes at the time but compared to new stuff, the newer stuff is much more entertaining.quigonjay said:

Artemis Fowl - quite good. You can see them trying to syndicate it out a bit..
Felt a bit like a cross between Bond, Spy Kids and Harry Potter.
7/10
Watched it but thought it was more of a kids film. Getting ripped to shreds on IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes because it doesn't follow the books, everybody is a critic these days. Had never heard of the books so that part of it never bothered me. Your kids will love it if they are still off school.Felt a bit like a cross between Bond, Spy Kids and Harry Potter.

Yes at the time but compared to new stuff, the newer stuff is much more entertaining.Original three films set the bar. Rogue One with Felicity and maybe Solo were the only two watchable ones from the "modern" era. The rest were just so abysmally bad it's difficult to rank them, I think I'd put the Phantom Menace at the bottom of the list. Just dire.

Personally, I think the only thing that Disney has achieved with their Star Wars films is to make the prequel trilogy seem slightly less crap. Schmed said:

Were you born this side of 2000? FFS
The sheer quality of the actors and the feel - the director of Rogue 1 actually went back to a lot of the techniques they used in ANH, ESB and ROTJ to give it the same feel.
Although to be partly fair I suspect you've only been able to see the updated versions of those films, with the George Lucas tinkerings.

I had to stop mocking her when she asked me what happened in it and I couldn't remember a single character, plot point or scene. All I had was people running away from lava, which I think I actually remembered from the trailer.

I think that unlike Aliens and Monsters people are beguiled by Dinosaurs simply because they did actually exist so they’ll put up with anything just to see them up there on the screen.
Da 5 Bloods
Spike Lee's latest effort on Netflix, got a bit irritated by it and stopped after 50 mins, might try to finish later as the reviews were good.
Its Lee so focus on racism, black power and stupid camera angles.
The script dragged at time and Delroy Lindo's character is damn annoying, and the flashbacks where most of the actors are not younger is plain odd and confusing (but saves money I guess).
4/10 so far, will update

I suspect there’s something about dinosaurs that means it’ll pull in the punters regadless of the storyline and quality of the script.

I don't recall any significant "noise" about it whenever it was released, though it might just have passed me by. Until I saw it in the Sunday night EPG the other week I don't think I realised it had been made. I did read some of the thread on here the other day (probably prompted by the TV showing) and there doesn't seem to be a good word for it in there, but I just didn't think it was that terrible.
