Valerian - Mediocre at best. Looked terrific but the acting/script/cast were mostly terrible. Zero chemistry between the leads and the chap was just a bit of a dick. The witty script was badly delivered, Guardians/5th Element did this right. Plot was ok if a little unlikely, I think I would have prefered it if we had a few more twists and turns.
Annoyed me that the elite troops struggled to kill the robot things but Valerian could one shot them.
Carla wents from an ace agent to damsel in distress and back again.
The robot spaceship telling them about Alpha really jarred and felt lazy and then despite being told about all the aliens aboard we end up mostly dealing with almost human aliens most of the time.
And it was too long.
6/10

Alien Covenant was a bizarre film, like THe Last Jedi did it looked at it's set-up film, Prometheus, and ripped up everything that was created. Really bizarre. It also lacked any coherent story and just seemed to be a bit of a mess even ignoring that cock-up. Really strange, I think Scott's successes early in his career came as a collaborative effect from all concerned, because this as his baby was just a dog's breakfast, especially as it wanted to be pat of Alien franchise which is effectively rubbishes.

Maudie

A captivating film beautifully acted by the main characters, Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke.

Generally not my cup of tea but Mrs phazed was keen to watch so we shelled out £7.99 on Amazon prime. A sound decision as it really was a truely enjoyable film.

A deservedly 8.8/10

It's been said many times, yes. yes

He is undoubtedly an amazing cinematographer but, just like George Lucas, his best works have been collaborative.

The trouble is, once a director gets to the point where their word is law, and people around them are too scared to voice a contrary opinion, there is nobody there to compensate for / correct their flaws.

Whilst Prometheus was a poor film over all, at least the ending gave a feeling that the follow-up could really be something interesting.
Instead, we get this HoS.
5/10 from me.
Same issues as prometius and the exact opposite of alien.

The characters do stupid stuff. They do stupid stuff really quickly there is no build up, no tension.

They are not believable, competent or likeable.

Blockers - was at a loose end this afternoon so Mrs I and I went to watch this not expecting a lot. There were scenes that had me in tears. Yes it's puerile humour and overplayed but (IMO) very funny non-the-less.

Greatest Showman - Not my usual cup of tea, thin plot, bit of singing and dancing, a bearded woman with massive tits.... 5/10 not a patch on LaLa Land

The Lady In The Van - Enjoyed this British film after stumbling on it on Netflix 7/10

Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay. Adult rated animation of the suicide squad idea, and surprisingly good fun

A Quiet Place.

Good one. Only 10 or so people in with me, but not much popcorn got eaten hehe . As said already, good acting, tense, good way of spending an hour and a half. It was rumoured and denied that this was going to be picked up as a Cloverfield film. I can see where they could do that, but it's better as it is without being tied into that.

I really wanted to like LaLa Land. My bestie and I put it on for a "girls night in" and both really wanted to like it, but about halfway through we both decided that we just weren't into it, didn't care what happened to the characters, and that watching it to the end would be like pulling teeth so switched it off. frown

Each to their own and all that though - I know some people love it, and fair play to them.

Alongside Jumanji as my surprise of the last few months, properly enjoyable and rips along at an incredible pace with an impressively short runtime.

I think particularly in the past year or so it's easy to take it for granted, but the visuals really are something else now. Zero uncanny valley and considering some of the things that happen in this film the vfx really doesn't miss a beat.

Just back from A Quiet Place; as (most) others have said already, an excellent, tense, tight film. Great performances from Blunt and the little girl; that one staircase scene really makes you cover your eyes. Hard to believe it's Krasinski's first debut as a director.

But what really made my night was about 30 mins in, when someone decided it was a good time to visit the loo and did the silhouette-shuffle along the row in front of the whole audience (they were in the 2nd of 7 rows of seats) and just as they are stepping over the final seat, in the middle of an intensely quiet scene, they let out the loudest, wettest fart I have ever heard - the whole audience goes into hysterics, no-one is paying attention to the scene playing out on screen, and the offender runs off. I don't recall them returning; probably snuck in the other side to avoid doing a walk of shame.

I watched Last Action Hero last night - A silly, tongue in cheek film, with a brilliant soundtrack. Could have been better as it did feel a little rushed (and reading up on the history of the film, it was rushed a bit).

Central Intelligence - comedy actioner with Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson. Surprisingly enjoyable, it'll never win any awards but was a harmless way to pass a couple of hours

Reminds me of a time in a cinema in Bristol, think it was seeing Ghost in the Shell last year. Somebody in the front row stood up mid way through the movie, staggered around a bit, before falling in the floor. A member of the group they were with attends to him, and a few people in the aisles head down, all whilst Scarlett Johansson does her thing on screen. Quizzical looks are being exchanged amongst the rest of the audience. Eventually he's picked up and helped out, with one of the people from another aisle telling us he had done a load of Ketamine just prior to coming in to the showing.
