Another thumbs up for Jumanji from me. The original was on TV yesterday so we went along this afternoon to the new one. As a serious film review yes there would be problems with it lots of things with the helicopter scenes, but it can get away with them as a 'video game film' so you let it go and it's good smile .

Just watched Life.

Ok. Nothing more. Not as good as the similar, and 40 year older film Alien.

I'm not sure I would even consider it OK, I think it was at best a little bit rubbish. I'm not sure why it didn't work because it had a decent cast and a good story but it just wasn't nailed together very well.

Agreed. Although I found no singular point especially unlikable. I don't think the characters were brought out enough, ultimately I didn't care much about any of them really.

One of the reasons I remain a fan of (early) Ridley Scott is the fact that he made Alien a masterpiece out of an B-movie idea, a so-so story, and a fairly naff script. He brought out the best from the cast and production crew. Lots of films have all the elements in place, but something doesn’t quite work.

Spirited Away
I was with my parents, my sister, and her 4 kids (ranging in age from 10 to 14), and none of them had any exposure to anime nor had even heard of Studio Ghibli. So with a little trepidation I put it on for us all to watch.

My dad found it boring and fell asleep, and my mum kept saying throughout the film that it was charming, and she could see why I like it, but it was very slow paced and she thought I had made the wrong choice and that the kids were all on their phones and tablets and not watching.

Only they were - at various points they were glued to the screen.

After it had ended, my sis and the kids all said they loved it. And my sis said she would never have watched something like that, but is so glad she had.

I agree that it's a little slow paced and at 2hr20 it is rather long (I'd forgotten how long it was) but overall it was a win I think
A couple of years ago my dear old Mum bought me a ltd edition box set of Myazaki's films on blue ray, turns out that not only is it worth st loads as a collectors thing but the films are simply stunning! I and my wife absolutely love them (best watched in Japanese with sub titles IMVHO). They are all amazing, Spirited away and Kiki's delivery service are stand outs.

Pride, Prejudice and Zombies.

Pretty much universally panned but I quite enjoyed it!

Back to the Future Part 2 - really good sequel, but where is my hoverboard? You promised we'd all have hoverboards by now.

Caught The Last Jedi today.

Surprised to hear the rather unhappy verdicts, as other than the slightly jarring humour at points I thought it was terrific.

Yes, the limited edition box sets go for silly money on eBay. yes

I have a particularly soft spot for Laputa (Castle in the Sky) as it is the first Ghibli I ever saw. I saw it a very long time ago on telly and loved it, but did not know what it was nor did I remember the title. Years went by, and I gave up hope of ever finding it again and then a friend mentioned Studio Ghibli and I started watching the films, saw Laputa, and burst into tears as I had finally found it again. So it's kind of special to me because of that. Plus it's a great film.

I know, I'm daft. paperbag

I really should go and watch that soon, if only because I have seen all the others at the cinema on first release (yes, I am that old).

IT (the new one).

Really enjoyed it. I think I'm too old to find it truly scary, but it was plenty creepy and the banter between the kids was top notch.

I think of it as a twisted version of the goonies.

I'm sure I've seen a youtube vid which shows ALien was great because it was a composite effort, but all I can think of is Georg's brilliant lil vid.

I too have a special spot for Laputa; it was the first SG film I saw, back on Channel 4 in the early 90s, it used an idea from one of the greatest satirist/fantasy writers out there, and it's a great sci-fi/fantasy story. Plus it ties into ancient tech ideas which I also love. I can forgive the dubbing, because of that.
A while back Film4 had a SG season, I watched many, but not all because some were dubbed, and simply st. Princess Mononoke, they showed the original, whoooaaa, and then the dubbed...wtf, the music was changed and the acting was completely off and wrong, it really showed me how the dubbing can badly affect feel. So Laputa I can forgive, but Nausicaä and PM and SPirited Away have to be original.

- Howls moving castle,
- The Tale of Princess Kaguya

Both favorites in our house. The artwork in the latter is quite breathtaking.
