Mostly because when I'm trying to envisage myself in a space battle it's not as an animate ungulate.I thought Vogager was ahead of its time with Jayneway, Torres and Seven, the male characters were comparatively weak or just insulting in Chakotee's case so it's been happening for at least the last 25 years.
ETA. The doc aka Robert Picardo was by far the best character, I'd forgotten about him.

For the benefit of doubt, I'm here for a fun discussion/debate about Star Trek. We can have disagreement without animosity and none of my comments should be taken to heart by anyone in this thread.Anyway, I'd be happy with Saru as captain. They need to be careful to keep him properly alien and not make him too human. I'm sure I saw Sarek smiling at one point..

I think she improved as the show went on.
When you watch and listen to her here from 13:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_NeiF76AZA it's hard to believe that it's the same person.
I ended up watching all of that. Brilliant. I cracked up when she said "his nose fell off!"When you watch and listen to her here from 13:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_NeiF76AZA it's hard to believe that it's the same person.
Who'd have thought the demure Deanna Troi was played by a potty-mouthed EastEnder?

Nothing wrong with 'turning the tables', but not when it's at the expense of great acting and writing. What did Captain Autism's Autism bring to the show other than 'hey guys we have an autistic character!' (tick box), what does having two gay characters bring to the show (neither with charisma or charm) other than ticking a box and providing the soy latte bloggers something to write about on buzzfeed? There were something like 6 main characters, and the only one with some depth, acting ability, and charm was the psychopathic captain.

Which one was Captain Autism?!!
The chubby ginger one, who seems to be deigned to appeal to not only Autists, but single women in their 40's with no social skills, and cats who they sing to. The only time she brought anything to the screen was when she was pretending to be evil, other than that she brought nothing to the story.
On her first on-screen appearance she literally says 'they won't let me (something something), because of my special needs'

What does it take away from the show? Making them staight would not have given them more charisma or charm.AlexC1981 said:

If the other half was female, and written in the same way, yea wouldn't have made a difference. STD's writers are simply ticking boxes to make up for piss-poor writing. The doctor's purpose was to cause faux outrage on soyfans.com, nothing more...it's not like he did anything other than hold the scientist dudes hand and have his neck snapped.
