I must admit that the GA (as I know it ) sounds even nicer than a DFV , and I recall hearing it not only in Cologne Capris at Silverstone but also Alan Jones' March F5000 car with this engine in 3.4 spec in 1975. Last heard
one this week at Oulton Park - glorious racket .
In the days when RallyX was fun Tony Proctor used to run a Sierra with a GA in it. It was pretty impressive.

Overall I found it an enjoyable episode. The 'race' as a little unfair inasmuch as you had a massively experienced and talented ex-WDC in a car with huge ground effect downforce, vs a rookie in an inferior car. Even with the 10s stop-go it wasn't fair.

I had to admire Jenson's circumspection in realising that Guy did not know he was there and therefore backing out of a pass. That's a skill that Max Verstappen could do with learning. smile

The narrator and faux peril music still annoyed the st out of me though. As did the picture of a Lancaster when the Wellington was being discussed.

Also didn't the cars look primitive? Aluminium sheet with fibreglass body panels over the top. And your legs stuck out past the front axle with little protection. eek
We've come a LONG way in safety.

I wonder how much of the Top Gear one was set up. I know GM understands how things work very quickly, and is used to driving/riding bloody fast on tracks (and roads!), but RH will also be alright at it.
Was staged and scripted.

Missed the whole first part up to the F3 test, but was a bit disappointed with what I saw to be honest. Faux tension build up to a contrived 'race' which was just a high speed demonstration of two contemporary but rather different Williams cars.

Probably won't bother catching up with the first part if there wasn't a decent amount of detail on the build of the car (there never is).

I guess the weather didn't smile on them for the action shots in testing etc.

Was very surprised that there was no alternative but to have Guy in the Williams sharing a test session with 105bhp historic formula fords, or was that set up in the hope of building some kind of 'look how fast Guy is compared to these other racing cars, now he's getting the hang of it!' narrative.

Finally- is there a less happy person on this planet than Jonathan Williams. He's so obviously disappointed by getting the Heritage gig but Christ almighty to look at him you'd believe that he has to drown puppies for a living. Why put him on my television screen.

Normally I love Guy stuff, I've seen them all and read his book, this one was just ill conceived and just didn't work.

Agree with much of the above.

I think they tried to pitch it to please everyone (why wouldn't they) so the car bores like us who enjoy all the nerdy stuff and detail feel short changed.

I would've preferred a 10 part 'a car is born' style series showing Guy rebuilding the entire car in GREAT detail, but I am a bit sad like that and not representative of what the general TV viewing population want to see!

I would rather have seen more of the spannering and engine shop, but it's not very dramatic is it?
Guy asking all those questions to the engine builder was very funny.

But surely Top Gear is known to be a factual programme that is never anything but pure truth, with unscripted larking about that happens to be caught on camera. wink

If you were to watch the Williams film from a few years ago you'd be surprised just how right you both are! The man seems to have been defined by the fact he wasn't the chosen one for the F1 team. IIRC Claire explicitly says that he is resentful, never got over it and that they don't get on.

The normally quiet as a church mouse and never really outspoken Jacques Villeneuve thinks so too.

"Jacques Villeneuve does not mince his words when he talks about the team that took him to his one Formula 1 World Championship title in 1997, already indefinitely banned from the Williams paddock compound he has now fired a wicked salvo at deputy team principal Claire Williams."

So that's him off their Christmas card list too then. smile

He never seems to pass up a chance to make some subtle dig about how hard done by he is ('they've got hundreds of engineers, we've got five' was just the latest).

I found he was just as jolly in person.

In some ways I can understand but FFS get over it! It's destructive and pointless.

I freely admit that I know next to nothing about this, but on the face of it, if your Dad has built up an incredible legacy, overlooks you for running it when he retires and hands it to your sister, then the organisation is run into the ground with her at the helm, wouldn't you be justified in being a bit peeved about it?

Wiliams have won two races in the last fourteen years, so it was struggling before she was appointed in 2013. Her remit is "marketing, communications and the commercial aspects", so it would be a bit much to lay the blame on her.

As said above the Williams film does not show Jonathan a good light, nor Frank come to that. A Motor Sport magazine podcast with JW is also revealing - I don;t want to be rude but he comes over as being uncomfortable and out of his depth and lacks Claire's eloquence and confidence , to an almost shocking degree

So the bit that brings in cash, and as their 2 biggest sponsors are walking out the door while also kissing goodbye to the Stroll cash cow it could be argued she’s not doing a great job...

If the Stroll payment for getting Lance out of his contract being the factor is true in making sure they have enough cash to go racing next year then things really aren’t great with Claire Williams at the helm.
