Start with the short version. It has extra voiceovers in it to give you a "lay of the land" at various points.

The longer version assumes a higher background knowledge of F1 at the time, although should still be fairly easy to follow. Depends how many geeky anecdotes you want.
Thanks for that, i shall give the short version a go 🙂

Shmee has bought an F1 rolling chassis that he's saying is an actual Arrows A18 raced by Damon Hill in 1997 just minus its engine.

I'm not sure what he's bought exactly but it doesn't seem to be an Arrows A18, the body work is entirely different, shape, nose, rear wing, wing mirrors and also look at the panel lines and access panels.

Most obviously the sidepods which in Shmee's car are set pretty far back level with the drivers head whereas in the actual Damon Hill car they are much more forward being almost level with the drivers hands.

Moreover, the front suspension seems to be completely different the actual Arrows has the main forward arm pointing backwards towards the wheel whereas this has the main forward arm emerging perpendicular.

Good spot. I’m torn, because in theory, all the missing bits of aero and also the suspension parts could, theoretically be swapped. Same for the massing ‘headrest’ but, below air intake. So I don’t know.

Beautiful looking cars though, both.

If it is not an Arrows A18, what is it then.

I did wonder when he unwrapped it as the sidepods are wrong.

If it was me I’d find out exactly what it is and history and go back to original livery.

Having a look at other Arrows cars it looks more like a 1999 A20 with modifications if anything, driven by De La Rosa and Takagi. The sidepods seem to match almost exactly and the front suspension too.

This would explain the narrow track like other 98+ cars.

Though it's still not totally correct, suspension angle is still slightly different along with the nose and other bodywork bits, so it's maybe some kind of frankencar built only to exhibit. Which then means you can't get it running as it's not been built to take aero loads.

All the comments on Youtube about putting an engine in then are not a good idea.

I mean maybe it is legit... but it doesn't seem to match any F1 car that I can see, especially that front suspension where the forward arm has almost a reverse sweep on the Shmee car.

Also any genuine race used car will often have its FIA stickers in the cockpit, people don't tend to remove these as its an inherent part of the car's history and value.

It'd be nice to find out exactly what it is

I have a strong feeling it’s a bitsa (bitsa this, bitsa that). Maybe it has a component or 2 from one of DH’s cars but with it having been use as a sim car I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a parts bin special. Will be a shame and keen to know more about it.

Also - all the YouTube talk about bolting an engine in and off you go is a bit ridiculous. Would be easier and probably cheaper to buy one already ready to run.

Wonder how much it cost. If its been sold as an ex-Damon Hill race used chassis then presumably it had a premium attached - I would hope not though, given its almost definitely not ex-Hill.

Non race spec display cars that are just pretty shells are normally around £20k used I think.

Also he keeps saying Minardi took over Arrows - they didn't, they bought some Arrows cars at auction when Arrows was liquidated to see if they were better than their 2003(I think) cars, that's all they did.

There's only two things that's really likely to be useful for - a display toy, or maybe a spares pile on the rare chance that any of the bits are actually good.

As long as he only ever plans to sit in it going 'vroom-vroom' he's fine.

Apparently F1 teams when building show cars would always make the suspension deliberately "wrong" to stop any eagle eyed competitors working out what they were doing.

The Insta story seems to suggest that it’s even better than what was first thought - but that could just be him putting a positive spin on the situation.

It’s very unlikely that it only turned up a day or so ago, and if it was a complete pup(pi), I think it’s unlikely that he would have put it on his channel.

Could be completely wrong though - after all, all traffic is good traffic wink

I would have thought he has done, I think a lot could do with where he got the car from, it is in a Michelin so maybe it has come from one of their factory's?

Many of the cars from the lower end of the grid get messed about with over the years and pass through many hands.

The only thing I have heard is from someone that was on Fifth Gear and he said that a F1 that is running isn't as expensive as you think it is, but that depends on how much you think one would cost.

This is the guy.

"This isn't the first time chassis no.211 has been in the spotlight following its retirement – in 2004 it featured on an episode of Fifth Gear where property developer Frank Mountain traveled to Ferrari's factory in Maranello, Italy, to buy the car. The episode followed the entire buying process, from signing the purchase contract to test driving the car on Ferrari's private Fiorano test track. It is unknown if Mountain was the seller of the car this time around."

Maybe it's an Arrows A23 chassis? Which has a great story!

They were all bought by Paul Stoddart and became Minardi PS04. Then some eventually became the Super Aguri SA06.
