Mr Bates vs The Post Office

"The Inquiry restated its position that it considered it important to hear oral evidence from Ms MacLeod. Further, it offered to meet Ms MacLeod’s travel and accommodation expenses. However, Ms MacLeod has made it clear that she will not co-operate with the Inquiry by providing oral evidence, whether by attending the Inquiry in person or by giving evidence remotely via live video link."

When all of the innocent sub PM ‘s were taken to court and found “ guilty “ ( based entirely on what the computer incorrectly said ) why was the fact that no actual missing money was ever found not been mentioned ?
Surely the courts might have asked the question ?
Or am I just being dense ?
I'm not an accountant but AIUI basically as the cash never existed in the first place it could never be "found". The system bugs made up false income that should have reconciled against cash/bank. When it didn't, that's when they assumed it had been stolen rather than never existing in the first place. The SPM's had no way of proving the "sales" hadn't happened in the first place. It would take a forensic review to reconcile against stock & services rendered to prove that the sales didn't take place, that's what Second Sight were doing. When the suspicions became evident that's when they shut it down and said "nothing to see here". The initial court hearings with the PO as Prosecutor itself would have been fairly low level and heard separately by different Judges and the courts wouldn't have any reason to disbelieve the PO. In hindsight it looks suss knowing what we now know but at the time it wasn't the thing it became.Surely the courts might have asked the question ?

Just my twopenneth anyway....

Wasn’t it Roosevelt who had a plaque on his desk which read along the lines of ‘you can delegate authority but you can’t delegate responsibility’
Anyone ever told Paula?
A phrase often quoted at work when we discuss supervision and how this is dealt with when someone is on leave.Anyone ever told Paula?

After the convictions are quashed I’d like see some form of penalty for Vennells. Heavy fine and removal of her ill gotten pension would be a good start, preceded by some chokey time…
She will never suffer either financially or physically and will continue her life as a multi millionaire.People like her are untouchable.
Gonna have to go back and watch it again over the weekend or maybe on Monday! Not been feeling too good over the last couple of days and not sleeping well. Fookin slept this afternoon though, sat in in the chair!
Thankfully, not planning anything for this Bank holiday, so maybe something to watch rather than the rain that's forecast!

Well. If that was it. Then she has got away with it. I bet it didn’t go better than that in her wildest dreams.
Except now she is known to the Great British Public, and, for a while at least, she will be subject to the sly looks, whispered conversations, and be recognised wherever she goes. She's gonna be getting her groceries delivered for months. Or will her husband have to run the gauntlet? What's happening in her local church where I understand she was a regular preacher? Surely they won't have her back! Mind you, there's so much hypocrisy in religion already, she could be welcomed as a guest speaker in churches around the country!

Paula Vennels, an ordained priest, is further proof, as if any were needed, that the moral superiority felt by most Christians is just an illusion. They are as bad, if not worse, than the rest of us.
Recall the Methodist lay preacher former chair of the Co-Op, too…![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Whilst PV clearly has been found seriously wanting, she’s equally obviously not the only person complicit in this matter. She should not, therefore, be disproportionately scapegoated as I suspect might be about to happen.
Her watch, yes; but myriad others informed and bolstered the culture that allowed, indeed encouraged, innocent people to be criminalised on the back of entirely compromised evidence that magistrates and crown court judges were in no place to doubt.
This is far wider than this wretched woman; even if she does not realise it (maybe she’s starting to). Exposing wrongdoing is one thing; hounding someone into self-immolation is quite another. I hope we’re not in the latter territory notwithstanding her testimony these last 3 days has been abhorrent.
