American Sniper (2014)

Cliché ridden, hell yeah, American war movie portraying the real life of the highly successful Seal sniper Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) over four tours in Iraq and the toll it took on him.
A bit boring, a bit too long, and a bit predictable. Saved, though, by the last half hour and it's totally jaw dropping conclusion.

7/10

Is not about me, typical ad hom response. They can make what they like, but if they actually want people to watch it, pushing a minority agenda is not going to be popular as already seen.

Re-working one of the great sci fi classics could easily have been a disaster of wokeness and I'm glad they (mainly) stopped listening to those pushing this agenda.

I don't care who's in stuff as long as that stuff is well written and directed.

The Ministry of ungentlemanly warfare.

Chanced on this last night & gave it a go. Within ten minutes, I was longing for thre sweet embrace of death. In the hands of Guy Ritchie, a daring WW2 operation to disrupt German U boat operations is run over by a bus, dragged 100 yards down the road & finally flung through a plate glass window, Long on action, short on tension, cardboard cut out characters, overlong one handed, no aiming machine gun massacres.

Every last German lifted straight from the pages of every 1950's war comic, managing to be simultaneously arrogant & hapless, lacking only fencing scars & monocles, Churchill seemigly on a crash diet & played as a cringy caricature and somehow having his premiership in the hands of an admiral who may or may not tell on him. Ultimately, Guy Ritchie's laddish vibe overlays the whole thing to its grea detriment. I wasn't a fan. Three ration books out of ten.
I agree, it was rubbish. Quite a good cast horribly wasted in cinematic no man's land.

I watched it last night. The most impressive thing in it was Cavill's moustache.

28 Days Later at the cinema last night. I hadn't seen it before and I didn't know it was filmed on SD digital camera, so I wasn't expecting the potatovision resolution hehe . Liked it a lot though, the deserted cities and roads were well done. It's obvious that it's a low budget film (don't know how much the budget was), it is a step above most end of the world/zombie stuff though. Hopefully they show 28 weeks soon.

The post credits scene was filmed in HD and shows what the whole film could have looked likel, that's the only downer.

Probably late to the party on this one, but The Holdovers was superb.

Very gentle film, great acting from Paul Giamatti, very touching story with some great comedy too. Feel good film for a rainy day.

10/10 from me.

I have this and 28 weeks on DVD, whilst weeks isn't quite as good they're both brilliant films. There's a reason I never go the Blu Ray smile

From memory it was both a necessity of the shooting schedule for the deserted street scenes and a stylistic choice to shoot on such basic cameras.

There are three alternate endings to Days, one which was shot and tested and worth searching out if they're online.

I know there's renewed interest in the films with Years coming out but I do hope they don't attempt to upscale the original, it looks the way it does because that's what it's supposed to look like. Changing it would take away from the overall experience IMO.

I have it on DVD and watched it many times, then recently I watched it on Disney+ I think... and yes the image quality was fairly rubbish! hehe

I knew there were 2 endings to 28 Days Later. I didn't know there was a 3rd

The alternate ending (that was filmed) is far more plausible because there is no way that they could have saved Jim's life after he took a bullet to the gut. They just didn't have the medical expertise. Although, having said that, they could possibly have kept him alive long enough for rescue, although he would have been in a pretty bad state. There's no way he would have been as chipper as he was in the official ending.

I own both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later on DVD, but have never got round to watching the latter.

Description of the three here: https://screenrant.com/28-years-later-alternate-en...

I agree with you on the bit in spoilers btw.

It's easy to forget the impact this film had for many reasons, most notable of course the depiction of the "Zombies".

You should absolutely watch Weeks, if only for the opening.

Friday night trash to watch with a takeaway and a tin of beer or two. Stupid movie, poorly done.
Stuck that on the other night along with a large glass of red.

Woke up at 2am in the morning with the telly having auto turned off.

Had absolutely no memory of what I had been watching, it was so memorable laugh

yes I find the concept of running zombies quite terrifying. And then, the way they portrayed them in World War Z as they climbed over the walls of Jerusalem... it's something you just can't plan for or resist.

The Crow

One of my long time favourites. Cult following now but deserved more love on initial release.

Dark, brooding, great soundtrack, original - what’s not to like!

Yes, it gets pigeon holed as "a cult movie because he died" but it's better than that. The Critical Drinker's review is good (warning: swearing)

Another well known movie I have never watched - don't know why.
