Just looking through the tv guide and thought is there another country that has a broadcaster in the same vein as the BBC?
It has 5 tv channels (albeit one is BBC HD) with regional news and political programmes and dozens of radio stations from Radio 1 through to the small regional stations.
Also it's content is often called world class.
Is there a broadcaster with such a huge range and diverse national coverage?

Simple answer - not really. RTE in Ireland does its best on much smaller budgts and carries commercials - so it is a bit like a BBC/Chanel 4 hybrid in many ways. It does very good news and current affairs for domestic issues.

I didn't think so.
Is it because the BBC was the first?

Not quite.

India
Nepal
Pakistan
Hong Kong
Japan (whose NHK is probably closest to the BBC)
Malaysia
Korea
Croatia
Estonia
France
Germany
Ireland
Italy
Montenegro
Netherlands
Poland
Denmark
Norway
Finland
Sweden
Spain
Argentina
Canada
Chile

To name just the ones on Wikipedia all have state media funded by a levy on the populace.

Australia's ABC is Government funded but, again, it's not really comparable.

The British system ensures we consistently produce some of the best TV in the world, so I'm surprised the model hasn't been copied. I don't know how easy it would be to introduce in modern times though.

There's a little bit on there, but no real numbers.

There's a graph on the BBC website about it. Make of it what you will. This is for 09/10.

Thanks for all the interesting information guys.
But do any of the other state broadcasters have such a wide range of channels, tv and radio and have all the regional stuff too.

What are you angling for? If you want my opinion they produce some fine dramas and the F1 coverage is good but far too often their documentaries and political programmes are so blatantly biased towards the left that they are laughable. Question Time is a classic example. Likewise they have recently decided they no longer need present the alternative opinion on Global Warming because "the majority" agree that it's MMGW. Green/Left bias in the extreme.

Not after anything politiacal, just interested in the range of broadcasts and stations from one company in other countries.

Canada has CBC (oddly enough, Canadian Broadcasting Corp), they have tv and radio all across the country, including national and regional stuff, multiple radio stations, etc.

However, we don't pay a fee directly to CBC, and they have commercials. Some good 'home grown' shows, some very good documentaries, and some crap of all shapes/sizes.

Similar, but deffo not the same.

Not for the amount we pay and with no adverts, no.

Sweden television fee is about £200 for 5 TV channels and radio.

It does not compare in the slightest to BBC, in fact I end up watching BBC Knowledge and other BBC channels more than anything else. Apart from news most of the stuff I watch are US imports anyway, eg Big Bang theory etc.

So I reckon BBC is value for money.
