I know it's not bafta award winning, but I don't mind watching the series to pass the time. Certainly beats endless TG repeats.

Yesterday they were rebuilding the home of a family in Gloucester. As is often the way, the "deserving" family seemed a bit fishy.

Man buys house from mother when he gets married and has 2 girls. Fine.
Man saves up a bit and decides he wants to build an extension. Fine.
Man works for Honda, so unfortuantly was put on 4 month no work, shut down. Not his fault and tbh pretty bad for him and can understand the anguish of it all.
Bank withdraw the loan half way through the extension. Pretty stty for him, but not his fault.

However, suddendly his (hideously overweight) Wife starts getting "depression" and I use the quotes because she didn't seem depressed. I accept it takes different forms, but she still was fat, (so eating regularly) she still put on her crap makeup (still cared about her appearence) and was clearly the dominant one in the pairing. The guy was evidently a down trodden man who tried very hard to look after his family but was suffering and it seemed to me that wifey was blaming him for their situation! He then had heart attack which compounded his problems as now he becomes difficult to find work. Though it wasn't clear why he didn't just go back to Honda after the 4 month break.

Then one of the daughters becomes "depressed" and when Nick Knowles and the team turn up she won't make eye contact with them. And hasn't been to school for over a year. And is upset that her grandmother died ages ago. (no st sherlock, old people kick it!) But strangely the daughters both have laptops and mobile phones. Nice to know where your JSA is going. Instead of (I-don't-know) maybe some tins of Dulux and some plasterboard! There was MOULD on the walls FFS!

Anyway, the team with a good few hundred volunteers completely gut and rebuild their house. In the meantime they take the daughters horse riding as a pick me up. Didn't see wifey during this. And it looks brilliant at the end. But not once during the unveiling did the wife say "wow" or "thank you" In fact both parents looked like they were thinking "this place is now worth a fair bit if we sell it" Someone carries out £100K worth of work for free on your house because you're in dire straights, "Thank you so much" becomes the 4 words you say over and over and over!

And of course a mere 2 weeks after the filming the daughters depression subsides enough and she goes back to school!

Cynical? Me?

Agree with everything you said, one thing you forgot to mention is this is on the BBC! That means we as licence payers PAID FOR THE fkING WHOLE THING! This episode left a really bad taste!

Not on your own there, I thought much the same as you. Mind, think the chest pains were put down to stress and not a heart attack. Wonder how much they are asking for the place now?

I think the daughters depression was quite genuine, at her age a lot of her friends were probably having sleepovers, and she was likely teased about the st hole of a house she lived in, not to mention the eczema and so on.

Agree with you on the wife front though, absolutely no show of emotion, she's just had her entire house rebuilt for nothing and it's 'better than expected'. It's a good watch, shame some of the people they help out are thankless morons though.

I agree the program was deliberately biased to suggest cures for health issues which were frankly at best highly improbable.

However there is such a thing as artistic licence in making every program. Trouble is that modern journalism is very much more interested in success than the truth.

Talk shows are the worst example where frankly I do not believe the true accuracy of half the stories.

In the case of the Daily Mail I not believe one tenth of the stories.

We have a real problem with the activities of journalists generally as evidenced in the widespread use of criminal activities which I think will be shown to be widespread in journalism in the UK NOT just the NoW.

Large pinch of salt needed with every article read or program watched,

C'est la vie!

I'd like to have seen a bit more about what they were putting in the building, and how they were doing some of the things, rather than all the sob stories.

Before they did the "Big Build" ones, they gave some useful DIY tips, some good design ideas, and a bit of banter between the regular lads and the female designers. I quite enjoyed that.

I think they're trying to compete with the American "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Which is a mistake.

I missed the early part of the episode (and therefore the emotional scene setting).

I just saw the unveiling. I know British people don't wear their emotions on their sleeves as the Americans do but that couple just looked underwhelmed. Probably wondering then the 50" plasma was arriving?

The unveileing sure lacked the usual explosion of emotion and relief.

The kids seemed decent enough.

What upset me about that program was the way the parents left the kids room. Alright, the major works may be out of your depth, but FFS how much and how difficult would it be to put a bit of sodding wallpaper up in the kids room. Even if you went to bargain type shops, you'd be able to pick up some paint for not alot.

Considering the kids got depression, it'd be one of the first things on the list. The condition of the place isn't going to do her any favours. Thought the other nipper was marvellous given the circumstances tbh.

Someone who had their house done on this program frequested another forum I visited and it was all documented there. I believe his house was i na state for 2-3 years before the program agreed to rebuild it for him - so some peopel do have it bad I guess.
