Don’t Forget The Driver: BBC2

I think it could develop, slowly, like the Detectorists.
I quite enjoyed it
I thought I'd enjoy it more, agreed it has potential. I like Toby Jones, the character was resigned to mediocrity, he played it to perfection. I quite enjoyed it
The other driver is a lazy phoenix night, office, gavin and Stacy type caricature.
It has potential to become quite dark.
It's growing on me ; assuredly it is not a mainstream comedy and nor is it the sort of quintessentially English eccentricity of Detectorists either . Stunningly shot , and broodingly dark . We all know its main theme is Brexit but it is subtly done , just a subtext to the plot - or rather lack of one, as this seems to me to be almost entirely character driven . I will stick with it ...
I watched the first 2 episodes last night.
It's brilliant but it's not a comedy in any way, shape or form. It's about the disappear of his life.
But one thing struck me; if Toby Jones was not an actor, I reckon he'd actually be that character in real life.

Like Fleabag, which ended up as nothing like a comedy in the conventional sense , and like Detectorists and plenty of other good stuff like Rev , Extras and so on this is a TV show with elements of humour , drama and tragedy . And it's all the better for that, as the saints preserve us from conventional sit coms - or at least the 99.999% that aren't Frasier or Cheers .
