Just a heads up that the film Grand Prix is on BBC 4 tomorrow night at 8-10 p.m. Will record it on the Sky box as will be watching For The Love Of Cars on Channel 4 at the same time.
Great film.A repeat, but after the film 'Madness in the desert Paris to Dakar Rally' 2255-2355hrs BBC4.
interesting trivia , Brian Bedford who played Scott Stoddard couldn't drive .
James Garner , was so competent a driver many pro's thought he could have made a decent living in motorsport.
all the cars were formula juniors with f1 its added , James garners BRM was actually a Lotus type 22 , which recently came up for sale.
they are great cars to drive

I believe James Garner actually did some racing when he was younger before getting into acting and afterwards too. Mainly off road racing and he drove the pace car at the Indy 500 three times. Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart also said he was very good and he did all his own driving for Grand Prix whereas the actor who played Stoddart couldn't drive for toffee and was played by others in the driving scenes.

There were some genuine F1 cars in there as well; and Frankenheimer was quite particular when it came to matching the engine noise to the correct car on the soundtrack.James Garner , was so competent a driver many pro's thought he could have made a decent living in motorsport.

Yves Montand apparently wasn't much cop at driving either. In some of his in-car close-ups he's in a special rig being towed at high speed, heroically keeping a look of sheer terror at bay. Redford's character wears dark goggles, a wise move that meant he was spared the same ordeal!
I always thought Redford looked somewhat similar to Jim Clark; indeed my dad thought it was Clark when we watched it on TV many years ago.
It is very interesting reading contemporary articles in "Motorsport Magazine" about the shenaningans surrounding the filming going on at the various GPs in 1966. The basic view was that it was an imposition by Hollywood on the normal course of events and that there were safety issues (yes - the word "safety" wasn't completely taboo in 1966). This reached a head at the Belgian GP when one of the cameras fell off a car and was then run over by Graham Hill.
I saw some of the filming.
I went to the 66 British GP at Brands. My father and I wandered into the paddock and was talking to John Copper - as you do - when there was a minor explosion in the dip and clouds of oily smoke billowed into the air. There was a big caravan, the big 'mobile home' type nearby and onto the little veranda can Jackie Stewart. He looked towards the blaze, the turned to someone inside and said: "It's only the filming people." He put one hand on his hip for emphasis.
What with his stance, and high pitched voice, my expression, which was shock at one of my heroes being so close, was misinterpreted by John Cooper. He said: "Don't worry son, he's got a lovely wife."
Later on there was a request for spectators to stay behind for some filming, which we did.
Earlier on there was a bit where one of the drivers was interviewed standing by the side of his car, an F2/3 Ferrari. I pushed my way to the front and my jeans, belt and a bit of my jacket are in the film.
Famous or what?
