Lots of advertising around this, watched the first hour and it really reminds of an old movie https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080421/ Battle Beyond the Stars I used to watch as a kid. Exactly the same premise, farm person goes recruiting fighters to fight nasty overlords in space. I remember liking A Team at the time and seeing George Peppard die in the movie I was like noooooo lol

Anyway, looks like a straight up copy of that storyline so far but much more character building and special effects. Been good so far.

Yes watched a bit more and people literally demonstrate their skill set then just happily sign up for no real apparent reason … aside from the rebel brother who I think his reasoning is sound

Yep, a copy of Battle Beyond the Stars but people on foot rather than in distinctive spaceships.

Like the above, having watched it all now, just couldn't see how they could realistically gather all those people by just turning up and saying 'hey come join us' and everyone just goes along with it. It was always there in the background just niggling away. Maybe the directors cut fixes that, but why release something substandard and nonsensical from a storyline perspective in the first place, just release something that makes sense.

Googling reviews it gets on average 2.9 out of 5, with around 80% of votes going for either 1 or 5, so its a bit marmite!

Its amazing what good marketing coupled with a huge subscriber base on Netflix can do for engagement.
It felt a little like a Rogue One type of movie from the trailers, rugged and gritty with a strong line up.
But it wasnt...

Is there a touch of Seven Samurai about it
If you read the director comments online they mention conversations about seven samurai as inspiration for the story, except in space. Even though it had been done already with Battle Beyond the Stars.

Are we meant to watch the directors cut of the awful part 1 yet?
Although the thought of risking wasting another few hours of my life watching it again...

Yes it was absolutely dreadful as a modern sci-fi.

No coherent storyline and wooden acting.

Trash.

Just finished it. There were a couple of nice cinematic moments but generally utter dross.

Yes it is funny isn’t it. Spaceships, all sorts of incredible technology, yet galaxy wide authoritarian empire is still reliant on some sacks of grain and yes they haven’t invented a harvesting machine yet on the planet…

I chuckled towards the end when he said “you saved everyone” but not really everyone was it, loads of people were gunned down and they had a mass funeral lol

Is anyone going to have an honest conversation with Netflix bosses about how dreadful it was?

Its obviously set itself up for another installment, as much as I love Sci-Fi I wont be watching the next one.
The only way to stop Netflix producing utter garbage like this is to literally not watch it and become a statistic.
