anyone watching this?

about a wealthy family financially helping a 'poor' family.

the 'poor' family are just what you expect. black family living on grotty estate. mother the size of a bus, three kids, one sleeping on the floor, etc.

they're living in 'poverty', the only income they get is the £240 a week in benefits!

ignore the benefits part a second, that's two hundred and forty quid a week! more than most people take home on minimum wage!

what a joke

I thought the rich family bought the table, sewing machine, laptop etc.as gifts and paid for decorating the childrens bedrooms as money given to them would have affected other monetries[correct word?]
I think the rich family might have bought the table, howewver, I'm sure the mother said she'd been out shopping and had a surprise for them (the beds). If so, convenient the beds match the rest of the furniture.

Also, these people are from Zimbabwe, aren't there any white, British people in poverty anymore or is it a requirement that the families in these shows are black and / or foreign?

That's not even the point though, she still gets £240 a week in benefits, that's £12,480 a year! I don't see how she can be struggling!

I got the impression - correct me if I'm wrong - that they are British citizens. Why should it matter where their country of origin is? The mother seemed to be doing a good job of keeping the kids out of trouble, which must be difficult given the area they live in.

She could do with cutting down on the pies though if she's going to stand any chance of getting a job. Is this a series? I'm guessing at a happy ending where she lands a job, moves out of the area etc.
Because the narrator kept banging on about how we, the public, donate X amount of money to poor people in other countries so for a change we should look to do the same at home? And actually, yes it does matter where their country of origin is, they've come here as immigrants and contributed what exactly? Nothing, and in exchange received £240 a week in benefits!

Surely she has received more than £240 per week. I think the £240 is the amount of money given to her each week, but probably doesn't include the rent and council tax on the council house she lives in.

If she really did feel bad about her daughter not having a proper bed to sleep in, why on earth didn't she ease of the pies and put the money saved in an account until she had enough for a new bed?
She spent £100 a week on food and when they showed her shopping she was doing it at a Pound shop!!!

What was the other £140 on?
I forget now, I only remember food because, surprise surprise, it was at the top of the list. I think below that it may have been Gas - £40 and after that I forget. That can't be right though, £40 a week on gas?

here we go again.

the dad's a nice bloke but the mothers a scumbag.

family donate two grand and on their essential shopping list the poor family put 'dvd recorder / HD - £150'. the mother then proceeds to spend £500 on a laptop for herself rather than furniture and clothes for the kids, then she buys the son a PC game which doesn't work on their old desktop computer (no suggestion he can play it on the new laptop). what a cretin

eta:

poor dad: we can't even afford a table to eat at

poor kid: they'll probably find it a lot different here (he says sat in front of his ps3 and ps2)

I love how the ps3 keeps appearing and disappearing between cuts, I hope it was a gift from the rich family and not another silly purchase. notice they've got another desktop pc now too.

they also had the internet right from the start yet couldn't buy the son shoes?

I thought the mother wanting a webcam for the laptop pretty much proved it wasn't for her 'business' and even after when she said she felt 'guilty', not so guilty she didn't take it back!

I'm also sure that during the trailer the mother says the Bailiffs have been knocking because they owe £200. Then when they received the first donation and were writing down their outgoings she said something like "Bailiffs, what's that? £300?"

didn't watch it, and i hate chavs etc., but £240 a week in benefits is hardly something to get angry over. i wouldn;t be able to survive on that and there's only me to look after.

as benefits go, thats pretty reasonable.
£12.5k a year in benefits is 'reasonable'? That's £20 a week more than most people will earn on minimum wage working 9am - 5pm five days a week and they'd have to pay tax and NI, you think it's perfectly acceptable this woman should receive this for doing precisely fk all?

i support the idea of being a welfare state and don't mind paying taxes to contribute to that. i'm quite glad we've moved on from putting kids in the poorhouse.
Except it seems the mother is far more concerned with what she can buy herself with that money rather than providing simple things, like shoes, for her son and whilst she remains long term unemployed all she's doing is showing her kids that they don't need to bother in life as someone else will pickup the bill for all those shiny electronics they'll want in life and so the circle continues

I'm still wondering how a PS2, a PS3, two desktop PC's and an internet connection is living in 'poverty'? I couldn't see if they had Sky or Cable as they didn't show much of their living room, I did however joke to the girlfriend that once the cameras are gone they probably pull the plasma back out from wherever they've hidden it (and given that the PS3 kept disappearing and reappearing it wouldn't surprise me)

Sad I know but I've ben scrutinising this 'poor' family on 4OD;

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/how-the-other-h...

These people are not in poverty, they just have piss poor money management skills which I assume is down to the hag of a mother.

First off;

In the opening shot of the family in poverty's flat, you can clearly see a SKY TV dish. At 5min 15sec you can see the Sky Digital box next to the TV, it's on top of what looks like a subwoofer!

They also have three PC's with two LCD monitors!! There's two on the table in the living room (a smaller one behind the big tower with the expensive looking printer on top) and one in the kids room under the cabin bed (4min 55sec). They also have an internet connection (possibly comes free with the SKY TV) which also means they have a phone line!!

So far that's a monthly Sky TV subscription, possibly an internet sub and a telephone sub! So about £30-£50 a month then, possibly more depending on their TV package.

then of course there's the £150 they spent on a DVD Recorder / HD, the kids PS2, a PS3, a ton of games and yet, they don't even have curtains in any of the rooms.

This show is mind boggling, surely the cameramen were walking around noticing all of this stuff? Why weren't they called up on any of it?

ETA: It gets better, apparently Pimlico Plumbers are somewhat of reality TV wes, having been on a few shows and they're represented by Max Clifford!

I would have laughed if Mrs O'D had blown the two grand on a massive lump of crack, which she'd smoked with her children, and then sent the Mullins a DVD of that. Thanks for the money, really appreciated it! Well, I wouldn't have laughed really, because children smoking crack – anyone smoking crack – isn't a laughing matter. And I have no reason to believe that Mrs O'D even likes crack
hehe

Unbelievable, they're paying £61.79 A MONTH to Virgin Media, for TV and internet no doubt. £61.79!!!

You can see here what they spent the money on:

So here's a rundown;

Council Tax - £196.72 (Even though the bill is £296.72)
Nursery - £310
Virgin - £61.79
Laptop / DVD Recorder - £735.27
Washer / Dryer - £580.99
Food - £29.59 (Good to see where their priorities are)
Computer Mouse and Scart Cable - £51.26
Unknown Item - £80.85

Total: £1965.62 of which £1316.26 went on the mothers crap
