There are plenty of ugly moments in this fly-on-the-cell-wall look at one of Europe's biggest prisons. You'll need an iron constitution not to flinch when we're shown inmates' improvised weapons, including a toothbrush with razor blades instead of bristles. But the biggest shock is how compassionate the warders seem. On a scale drawn from Porridge, they come across as more Mr Barrowclough than Mr Mackay. In one scene a female warder gives a "poor coper" who has been self-harming a firm ticking off followed by a touching maternal hug. The warders' polite jargon is endearing, too: demonstrating a chairshaped metal detector, one explains, "This will indicate if the prisoner has secreted anything about his person." In other words, if he has hidden a mobile phone where the sun doesn't shine. It turns out he has.

Maybe the phones the warders use are on the same frequency that are used by prisoners phones?

A compelling and candid look at life behind the locked doors of one of Europe's largest prisons.
Given unprecedented access to the London jail, this two-part documentary follows the frenetic lives of inmates and prison officers who make up this complex, noisy and disturbed community and includes powerful accounts from them on the emotional turmoil, frustration and anger felt inside.
This second episode focuses on what life is like for the prisoners at Christmas, when they miss their families most.
