So today we found out just how much the public sector are being expected to cough up towards their pensions, following much gnashing and wailing from the unions.

Oh the poor lambs. People on over £60k having to stump up a whole 5.9% MAX towards their gilt-edged final salary pension. The public sector needs to get a grip on reality IMHO.

I'm public sector and I pay nothing towards my pension...how does that make you feel..?

That said, when they come for it, I'll have to bend over and take the hit with no chance of striking or redressing it at all. Fortunately for you, there will be no mention of it in the press and the service we provide to you will not be affected one jot. As if you notice it anyway.

After reading the article, I wonder if the previous strike and demo has already helped them.

How pleasant, spiteful people enjoying seeing other people having their pensions reduced.

fbrs... you do appear to be making a few mistakes while forming opinions:

  1. That all of us public sector "socialists" (my particular section of the Sector is more right than left I suspect) agreed with everything the previous Government did.
  2. That all of us public sector "socialists" (my particular section of the Sector is more right than left I suspect) could do anything about it (there were semi-serious discussions but none ever came to fruition).
  3. That I am looking your way for sympathy...

Precisely the same as when my pension was removed this time last year.

Even if he is..?

I'd say the majority of public sector workers aren't on final salary pensions, I'd also say that calling us all 'poor lambs' demonstrates a huge lack of empathy of any kind anyway, I'd continue that the ones who are most affected are the same who work their arses off to do the jobs you don't want to do and I'd finish by saying he clearly has a vastly under informed but set in stone opinion of most of the public sector.

So if you've been in the same boat as I'm about to be, why slag me off?!

Or do you just need someone to vent your frustration at?

I have no problem with the size of public sector pensions, they can have have as much as they like, on the condition they pay for it. Which they don't...

Here's another thought, I pay into my works pension scheme and I get a opinion on changes. You don't pay into yours, but seem surprised you don't get a say...

When did I slag you off? confused

I simply find it astonishing that people in the public sector think that they are somehow entitled to a pension scheme that is so grossly out of kilter with the private sector and unaffordable to the country.

It's part of my terms and conditions of service, I was clearly too young and too full of hope when I signed up to them to think the government would be so willing to change them. Although I'd imagine they certainly will change sharpish after 2014...

What pisses me off is that I suffer because of the actions of others, be they politicians or irresponsible financial tpyes...I'd imagine that pisses many private sector folks off as well. The difference is the quick willingness to lump me and mine with the wothless non-jobbers hanging round the public sector who are the ones earning the big bucks, only working hard to cover their own arses and whining about having to contribute a little more to get much more than you or I ever will...

In the OP, where you lump me in with the rest of the public sector as a whining (inferred) 'poor lamb'...

When terms and conditions of service are agreed between you (the public) and I (as the public servant), I would expect those terms to be honoured, yes.

Incidentally, I'd say the pension I will get (or would have, I'll be one of the rats fleeing this sinking ship) is pretty in kilter with what anyone else would get. The only difference is that I don't contribute to it. That said, we are constantly reminded that the pay we get is (slightly) lower than our private sector counterparts - if we have any - to offset this benifit as well as the other benifits in the package...

TBH I don't and never have considered your sort of role "public sector" per se.
