What a complete and utter balls up! This is just staggering that this has been allowed to happen.

confused

But the climate change threads (political) relate to the poorest being shafted the most - and they're some of the most popular threads!

Yeah, right that's why those thread exist, not to justify rich people possibly having to change their lifestyles (more tax, more expensive energy).

I am not, by any stretch of the imagination (at least by PH standards) 'rich - in fact, tube drivers earn almost £20k more than me. With that in mind, I haven't had to change my lifestyle at all - but I do help my parents (who are poor in the accepted sense) pay their fuel bills - otherwise they will freeze.

Not everyone on PH are super rich tories.......

You are rich on global terms. The average bloke on the planet is much worse off than you.

There are losers in a Market economy. I suspect the fines from the bribery cases will reduce the bills a little in the long term.

Short term, it's interesting that the women moan about how awful it is, and the bloke in the story gets on with a portaloo for $14/month biggrin

Oh yes, stupid of me should just ignore the fact that people are without water due to corporate negligence... Nothing to see here carry on...

I would stress the point that certain things, home sanitation, electricity and heating, should be sacred and protected from the dangers of a market economy. How would you feel if your utilities were cut off for similar reasons, would you keep quiet and get by on calor gas canisters, bottled water, portaloo or petrol generators? Not for long I reckon.

Quiet, no probably not. Get by? Yup, I'd look for a solution and implement it. It's not as if they don't have utilities, it's just that they have been sold up the Swanee by their public servants, and are now paying above the rates they used to. Ho, and indeed, hum.

Speaking from experience of the same from one of our old family homes out in the sticks, oh that was the life ! Open fire, solid fuel boiler heating, septic tank down the field. We had free fuel to hand, rubbish and brash for example and a timber yard down the road with an abundance of timber waste. Only problem was it wasn't wise to play in that field in wet and warm weather, smelly!
What a luxury but thinking of people in a less well off built-up urban area who would have the space and money to install such things if they had to resort to it? Try installing a pot belly stove in a high rise flat!
is this what we want for society? At least set up all this new housing with that potential situation in mind if that's the road we're going down.

$150 a month for sewerage is scandalous. Everything is in the hands of private companies though and the market economy sometimes sucks. The system in Britain where you can buy utilities from whoever you want is much better, a much more genuine open market. Here you buy utilities from private companies but they are often monopolies. I have a choice of one gas supplier and one electricity supplier. We pay $45 a month for sewerage which is not unreasonable but every home in town pays the same. So we (2 adults) pay the same as a family of 6 as does a little old lady on her own. Lazy monopolies rarely provide good value or service whether they be private or public.
