I have a love/hate relationship with the good doctor. In his younger days he was a total firebrand but for the last 20 years he has actually worked quite hard on the peace process and think, in the end, he has been an overall force for good.

I want some of whatever you've been smoking!

Granted, in the end he was force for good (when the realities fo the situation were clearly put to him in black & white: do a deal & share power or watch Dublin get more involved in the running of Ulster) - but overall the course of his lifetime?

Nah. Nasty old man.

I would have to agree with you Eric. In the context of NI politics he was a leader who did not pick up the armalite, so in that regard he stands apart from many on the Republican side. But his rhetoric made a peace deal harder to put together.
Having said all that, peace was secured, and Mr P has made a valuable contribution to its continuence.

Hope he gets better soon

I know he must have had a road to Damascus moment in recent years but he is the man who was the root cause of what became 'the troubles' and what perpetuted them. He didn't need to take up an armalite (unless we chose to consider the 3rd force and his armed henchmen) for his words rallied and stirred others to do the dirty work instead. Parsley would make Abu what'shisface and the fundamentalist hate clerics look like rank amateurs.

Anyway, he came round when the writing was on the wall and that is one positive. Still, I think it will be an interesting interview when he reaches the pearly gates later in the week.

Saying that Paisley was the "root cause" of the troubles in NI shows a remarkable ignorance of the history of the region.

I wouldn't go as far as that Eric but I largely agree.
I do wonder though about the latter, nicer guy, worries about judgement day?

Being a man of the cloth, I'm sure he has been thinking about how he will be judged by God for most of his life.

He could, of course, take the Churchillian approach and be planning what he wants to say to the Almighty. I think he has the bottle to do so.

Like Eric, I have learned to respect the man for his efforts for Northern Ireland. However I would draw the line at liking him.

Once again I agree with Eric. It need him to bend a bit , and he did when it mattered. His recent visits South have been warm and friendly.

That's the most incorrect statement I've read on PH since joining. And I've read a LOT of ste this past year.

Ignorance on that level concerns me greatly.

Like him or loathe him, the man stuck to his guns and meant what he said, he did not backtrack, u-turn, or change his mind every five minutes as short term expediency like most other mealy mouthed politicians. I am not sure about how likeable he was but he really did stick to his principles and for that I admire him.

Dr Paisley is a Free Presbyterian. To him, and indeed all Free Presbyterians, popery, islam and satanism are viewed with the same contempt and disgust. They are also of the opinion that homosexual activity is ungodly, and vehemently oppose the notion of open homosexuality on the part of clergymen, and the notion of any form of blessing or even approval for homosexual unions.

Clearly many disagree with these opinions and some even find them unacceptable.

In 1977 he started a campaign called Save Ulster From Sodomy. I was never sure how it Wasserstein possible to sodomise a country, well not until I saw the Taesoch guarantee the Irish banks...
