A few months late I know, but I've just noticed this.

The birth rate is going up again. In the middle of a recession and all that.

I know PH has it's share of Malthusians, but I think it's good news. People breeding is part of a healthy society, and if the right people are breeding (more information needed!) it should improve the country over time.

It was always going to happen - Baby Boomers are becoming grandparents. Children are very useful, but having them in great demographic lumps is bad.

OK, I'll say it. This little boom has 2 major factors:

1) Benefit parents - thanks to Labour's oh-so-kind policies.
2) Immigration - thanks to Labour's open-door policies.

Getting worse, thanks to current Government also continuing same policies!

No denying it. Wasn't it 5% rise for benefits and 1% for public sector workers in the last budget?

Whilst not disagreeing with your sentiment...

We've had some bloody cold weather over winter! That normally starts a miniboom, and more so if the recession means people aren't going out. What else do you do on a dark night at home with the missus?

Thats a massive if. I would imagine the right people aren't part of this and are too busy working and too concernd about job security and getting a decent sized house to bring up a family in.

Idiocracy type births unfortunately.

Its all very sad. The best minds seem to be gay (turing), asexual (tesla), or just above things like procreation (John L Savage). More and more of our brightest kids seem to be commiting suicide too, as intelligence is a sin and celebrity a religion.

Add to that the millions of our strongest bravest men of breeding age being killed off in two world wars, i dont think we'll ever recover to where we were in terms of the human capital of 100 years ago.

Most the non suicidal youth nowadays look like mouth breathing pond life to me, fit only to work in sweatshops.

Sorry, it's against their human rights to work - let alone that hard!

Well according to your profile you have a job, an interest in cars and you can put a sentence together. So it gets my approval. Congrats mate. My first is due this month! Exciting stuff.

Oh dear. You're probably right, but I think saying that most of the best minds are gay or asexual is a bit pessimistic.

Einstein had 3 kids, as has Stephen Hawking. Thomas Edison has a very respectable 6.

It's an interesting point about the loss of human capital in the world wars, though the same could be said of any number of wars over the centuries. I'm sure nature plays a part but I'm inclined to believe that great minds are made more than they are born.

But according to many PH'ers on a recent thread we shouldn't be encouraging (or at least supporting by way of child benefit) better-off people to have children.
So guess what will happen instead.

Nope your user name tells us all we need to know, Good luck with lil'stinker when he/she arrives biggrin

As for the Baby boom, well as said, it all depends on how these children grow and "contribute" to society that will define if they were a good thing or not.
