Wasnt sure whether to put this here or in Homes and DIY, but anyway - it looks like the sort of thing that should be brought to wider attention, especially in the countryside against 3.14 lock openers

Can't say I have ever seen one of these symbols on a house. I haven't ever been looking though.

Yea, I guess the copper got an chain email and passed it on. It bears all the hallmarks of an urban legend, and it's also doesn't match up with burglars working as a national group looking out for each other, and passing on "tips"

Lets wait to hear what Bob Crow-bar, head of the national union of burglars, has to say on the matter.

I know the DM is a bit grim these days, but are they really resorting to printing news from the 1930's?

Why the fk would burglars want to assist fellow criminals and tell them which houses to rob? confused

I'm actually surprised the Mail's example photo of a burglar wasn't someone dressed in a black and white stripy shirt, eye mask and carrying a bag with SWAG written on it.

Just sent the following to Devon & Cornwall Police:

There is a story on the Daily Mail website which purports to contain quotes from a DC Steve Fleetwood who appears, from an internet search, to work for Torquay CID regarding symbols scrawled on residential premises which the paper says are coded messages between criminals. Oddly enough this same set of symbols was discredited as a hoax in a BBC News story in 2006. I wondered if DC Fleetwood had anything to say on the matter. DM story: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2259445/Po... BBC Hoax story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_midlands/4... Thanks and Kind Regards. Pothole.

I'll let you know if anyone bothers to respond
