Doubt it, he did a lot of "nationalising" of privately owned businesses and running them into the ground. Often using the army as muscle to break striking workers, guess the markets will be happy about his demise.

Venezuela is the most f++ked up country I've ever spent time in, the guy destroyed it. Anybody who THINKS he helped the poor is totally disillusional.

All too often the case in communist or socialist states.
IIRC, no mine in Africa has ever been nationalised and gone on to turn a profit, as it were (I forget the exact phrase).

He also removed the licenses of radio stations/TV stations that didn't support him. As an analogy a bit like Gordon Brown banning all TV/newpapers bar the BBC and DailyMirror/Guardian before the last general election.
