Google Street View: Residents block street to prevent filming over crime fears

Residents of an affluent village formed a human chain to prevent Google from taking pictures of their homes amid fears the images could be used by burglars.

The spontaneous protest erupted after a van filming digital footage for the internet giant's controversial Street View service was spotted entering Broughton in Buckinghamshire.

The distinctive vehicle – which had a tripod-mounted camera on its roof – was forced to turn back after neighbours united to block the road through the picturesque village.

Google Street View launched in 25 British cities last month and its camera vans are now criss-crossing provincial towns and villages to build up a near-complete virtual representation of the country.

Paul Jacobs, 43, who spotted the van in Broughton on Wednesday and rallied his neighbours to take to the street, said he was furious that his home was being photographed without permission.

"I ran outside to flag the car down and told the driver he was not only invading our privacy but also facilitating crime," he said.

"We've already had three burglaries locally in the past six weeks. If our houses are plastered all over Google it's an invitation for more criminals to strike."

Google is braced for more protests against its cameras after the public attention generated by the release of the first wave of its Street View images.

Since then its striking vehicles have been spotted in dozens of towns including Ipswich, Chelmsford, Buckingham, Milton Keynes and Worthing.

The technology firm does not alert residents when its vans are touring an area, but has promised to take down any images if home owners complain. It also employs software that blurs out faces and car number-plates.

A Google spokesman said that its driver had been acting within the law as he was filming on public land.

"Householders are entitled to request their property is removed from the site but only after the picture has appeared," he said.

"Street View is incredibly popular and now spans nine countries. It is just a further evolution of maps and a valuable aid to people moving house or wanting an insight into a particular area."

Mr Jacobs also alerted police to the protest in the village, to report the alleged intrusion of privacy. A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "When police arrived at the scene, the car had moved on."
So. They obstruct the highway - an offence. They intimidate a driver going about his perfectly legitimate business - taking photographs in a public place. Then they call the police! (I'd add wasting police time at this point) Then they even publicise the fact that they broke the law by talking to The Telegraph.

fking Nimby idiots. Why aren't they being arrested?

The fact that I sympathise with their plight (putting up with local burglaries) in no way excuses their behaviour.

When this google photographing crap first started, I remember a newspaper article being run in which they interviewed an ex-burglar.

He said what a great thing it would be to be able to case houses online, check out their security, escape routes, what they might have etc. all without having to 'loiter' and draw suspicion to yourself.

great eh? smile

Once again the Daily Mail Brigade do their little bit to slow down human progress.

Streetview is useless to burglars as it doesnt really allow you to look at whats down alleyways and side streets. The fact they had 3 burglaries in recent works shows that local burglars dont need any help!

They even wasted Police time calling the cops. fking idiots. As if google is doing anything against the law furious

Assholes.

Do they house-to-house red alert buttons in that village?

You'd have to move pretty bloody quickly to get your neighbours organised and in the street when you can already see Google's car heading your way.

Considering we have more cameras than any other nation on earth...

Maybe these idiots would be happier if you had to have a licence to own a camera. And a permit to take a picture, applied for in advance from the local government Department of Images. And maybe you'd need a fking visa to be allowed to walk down their Street or you could be arrested. Maybe they'd like all web-sites to be government controlled and audited for politically correct content only.

The breathtaking violation of the "human rights" of everyone else tells me they didn't stop to think about it for a second.

Which is why we need some public prosecutions of people who do this. It's the only way to educate the masses that having a camera and taking a picture isn't illegal.

No ones mentioned the fact that by being such a bunch of NIMBY s, they've now publicised their little village to the whole country, and the fact that some people have been burgled already, and will have nice new stuff on the insurance.

I feel an immediate visit to this village is neccessary. I shall be bringing a DLSR, a tripod, and a bouncer. Feckin' eejits need to be reminded about what's legal and what's not.

It's not just this village, there are lots of examples of people worrying needlessly.

Wasn't there a chap on here who wanted his house removed because of fears of paedophiles? Not because his kids were pictured but because his front garden had toddlers toys in it.

Someone should arrange a bus tour for photographers to visit the place.

Unlike the G20 nonsense this is actually something worth protesting about. A few hundred guys with big cameras marching down the street ought to get the right sort of publicity...

Please tell me you are making that up. No-one could be quite that breathtakingly moronic.

I despair sometimes.

I live in the same town as these people and my office is more or less a stone's throw from their 'village'

Affluent? Well it's not the ghetto but I certainly would aspire to live there.

It's amusing how he thinks Street View will be a useful tool for the burglar. How exactly? Does Street View tell you the types of locks on your windows and whether you have some nice jewellery in the house? rolleyes

Fantastic, I think going to the national media and telling them that this little village is particularly affluent and full of wealthy people is a really good way to avoid drawing attention to your village.
They will be hired to come up with our economic policy next

Is it the 'affluent' village that's a stons throw from Milton Keynes?

The village housing estate is on the edge of MK, 2 mins from J14 of the M1. I work on an industrial estate just up the road.

The village housing estate has a Hungry Horse pub within it's boundary. 'Nuff said about affluency I think....
